A popular alternative to Apple's Mail app has finally made the move from OS X to iOS, with the launch of
Airmail for the iPhone. The iOS app from Bloop carries over the features and visual styling of the desktop email client to mobile, with the app including support for Gmail, Exchange, IMAP, and POP3-based services, though it also adds in the ability to perform actions using 3D Touch shortcuts, and iCloud sync to retain the settings used on the
desktop version.
Under the app's main features, it can display single messages or message threads, with bulk editing, drafts, a unified inbox, multiple signatures, the ability to snooze messages, and aliases also available. Its push notifications includes a full body preview, as well as custom actions and filtering to show only notifications from VIP contacts, searching through messages also has options to filter by various settings, with messages able to be added into folders or labeled for easier sorting.
The email composer can create HTML-rich messages, with the ability to resize attachments within the app, and use it with various document provider services, including Dropbox and Google Drive. The contacts section includes the ability to designate individuals as VIPs, search through the Google Directory and Exchange address lists for linked accounts, and create group messages. Support for other apps is extensive, with highlights including Apple's Calendar, Wunderlist, Evernote, iA Writer, and Omnifocus.
While the app is made for iPhones, with added notifications for the Apple Watch, the developer hopes to create a version of Airmail for the iPad that takes advantage of the larger display. Airmail for iOS is available to download now from the
App Store for $5.
