Why is it that using slurs like "faggot" are still considered acceptable?

Think Graham Chapman screaming it in a falsetto, not a redneck uttering "You're one, aintcha?"

In the english language there are no real taboos, merely words that are considered extremely impolite.

Whether you want to call words like "******" or "faggot" taboos or extremely impolite doesn't matter a whole lot to me.

I realize that to some these two terms don't equate, but the basic intent of these, to come up with a derogatory name for a group of people, is similar. One is accepted and the other isn't though.

A faggot is a bundle of wood. A fag is British slang for a cigarrette. Most truly objectionable words in English have no "non-objectionable" uses; George Carlin's famous "7 words" is an example.

Of course HOW a word is used is extremely important, and if I were to refer to someone as "a faggot," I would be extremely impolite, while if I was referring to the bundle of firewood he held, that would be a different thing.

One problem is that most people don't understand English enough to use it correctly in the best of situations, so when they get into a bad mood, they use poorly chosen words because that's all they know. I can tell someone that I think he's stupid and that his parents aren't from the best of lines without using a single swear word-or otherwise objectionable words either. But the impact won't be there, because the subject wouldn't understand, and that's half the fun.

The place might be f*cking dead, but not so dead that I didn’t still have 371 threads to wade through (I waded very lightly) upon returning home.

That’s not really taking into account how the word is used, only in which sense the word is used. If/when someone calls me a fag(got), I’ll usually be fairly certain they’re not referring to me as a bundle of wood; but there’s still room for it to be both positive and negative.

I was called a fag at least fifty times at the pub over the past few weeks, but not one of those times bothered me, ’cause the blokes who called me a fag had no bad intentions whatsoever. It was meant as a pet name, not an insult. We were all laughing and chit-chatting happily the whole time. Likewise, I’d call one of them ‘wee spud’ (since he was from Louth—‘spud’ is an offensive term for a Louther), and he knew all along that no harm was intended.

More or less any word can be applied to someone as an affectionate moniker or as a slur; it’s mostly the context and our relations to the speaker that decide which is the case. Even words that are extremely hurtful and offensive lose their power entirely when said with a smile, by a friend.

Veggie or no veggie, that sounds disgusting (though I’m sure it isn’t really, if you’re into the whole carnivorous thing).

Heart, liver, fatty belly meat (!), and some abdomen omentum membrane … hard to beat that!

Yeah, I know—but they might have found a slightly less repulsive way of describing it than fatty belly meat. That sounds like something you’d find on a McDonald’s regular, not on a pig.

[Cue the “McDonald’s regulars are pigs, but pigs are not necessarily McDonald’s regulars” jokes]

So a guy walks into a bar and says "McDonald's regulars are pigs, but pigs are not necessarily McDonald's regulars"... What's the deal with that??

Well, yes. That was the gist.

I would have expected someone (correction: I would have expected you) to have given the proper Marilyn Manson ending by now, though.

Not being a 14-year-old girl, I'm unaware of Miss Manson's output.

*sigh*

“God is dead!” — Nietzsche.
“Nietzsche is dead!” — God.
“When I’m god, everybody dies!” — Marilyn Manson.

I thought that was fairly universal.

Nope, never heard that one.

I'd love to see Miss Manson try to kill Jack Bauer. How long before Jack starts torturing Manson with her own sharpened humerus?

Considering "Marilyn Manson" is a "guy," and how he dresses and makes himself up, I think Mr. Bauer would more likely "pop" him from 25m away.

The “pop” you’re thinking of would be necessarily impossible at a distance of 25 meters.
