Happens to me all the time. But it isn't just XP, it happens when I use my sister's MBP or a classmates MB as well.
I am also so accustomed to seeing menu meters that when i don't see it I think the computer is frozen.

I found some program called MyExpose for Vista (and TopDesk for XP) which gives you expose. Thankfully those exist since they keep me sane while I'm using Windows at work.

I don't really use expose that much, and I find the hot corners irritating because I'm not used to them.

I've never used the hot corners either. I used to accidentally set them off all the time. I'm an F9 guy.

Lately my windows-of-this-application hot corner (and hotkey) instead do the all-windows Exposé, despite repeatedly setting and resetting. Anyone else get this?

Do any of you use the top left as a hot corner? I never do because that is the one corner I hit by accident.

Set top right to 'Desktop' and see your Desktop in a flash. Great for moving files around.

I'm more of a Command-Tab kinda guy to switch between apps. I had Exposé assigned to my upper-right corner for a while until I figured I triggered it more by accident than on purpose. For now I just use F9 when I need to.

I like using the hot corners, especially when I need to quickly show the desktop, select a file, show all the windows again, and then drag the file to another window. I'm able to do all of this using only the mouse. But you are right, it is way too easy to accidentally set it off.

I really wish this feature allowed a user to set a timeframe before it was invoked. For instance, i would set it so that the mouse had to be in the corner for 2 seconds before it fired. That would eliminate most of the accidental invocations IMO.

I have this issue too. Using photoshop at work without expose is a nightmare when you've got 15-20 files open.

For those of you annoyed by accidentally triggering Expose, here's a tip: go to the Expose pane, click the drop-down menu to shown your options, then press a modifier key (like command or shift). See? Annoyance gone.

Myself, I trigger "all windows" by right-click.

Thanks for the tip! This should help tremendously. I knew you could do that with in the Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts section .... but for some reason it never occurred to me to try it in the Active Screen Corners section.

I reckon I frequently have as many windows open, but that is a serious number of open apps going on there.

No, I set right-click to activate "all windows." No corner needed.

Many Thanks!

I have disabled all expose'. Not that it doesn't have its place, but I just don't have a need and I was accidentally triggering it too often.

I use [command]+[tab} to switch between active apps and [command]+[`] to switch between open windows in an app.

top left = nada (would trigger too often when going for application menu)
bottom left = nada (feels unnatural for some reason)
top right = all windows exposé (easy to throw the mouse up there)
bottom right = dashboard
button above scroll wheel on MX1000 = application windows exposé
button below scroll wheel on MX1000 = show desktop

all in all, it works pretty well. and yes, i always try to use the hot corners (for both exposé and dashboard) while at work. Going from a 10-button mouse at home to a 1-button mouse at work ain't easy, either.

There must be something up with your Macbook. Even when I only had 500 MB of RAM in my 1.83 Macbook Exposé didn't lag, even if running PowerPC apps. Have you checked your Activity Viewer to see what's going on?

Really? I thought it was because I didn't have enough RAM (512 MB). But I've gotten to the point where I'm just frustrated at how long it takes to simply switch between programs. Exposé is just so slow I avoid using it all together. I did look at my Activity Viewer, but I honestly don't know what to look for. Nothing really seemed out of the ordinary anyways.

No, it's the RAM.

I have 2GB, and I only notice Exposé lagging when I have too much stuff open and the machine pages (or so menumeters and the disk grinding tell me).

I use top left exposé with all windows.

When ever I am on another computer I keep throwing my mouse up there to switch apps.

F1-F2-F3 for me.

My left hand is on the keyboard with the thumb resting on the left CMD key, as I'm into shortcuts anyway, so that's more convenient. No need to disrupt my mouse pointer location or the fingers operating it.

Hot Corners
  • Bottom Right = Exposé
  • Top Right = Show Desktop
  • Top Left = Dashboard

Logitech MX1000
  • Middle Thumb Button = Exposé
  • Forward Thumb Button = Cmd+W (Close window)
  • Back Thumb Button = Cmd+Delete (Delete to trash)
  • Button Behind Scroll Wheel = Cmd+H (Hide)
  • Button In Front Of Scroll Wheel = Cmd + E (Eject)

I use Exposé from the thumb and hot corner all the time, in equal measures. I find using a thumb button for close and delete is really efficient, even more than the keyboard shortcut (which I used all the time until getting my MX1000).
