I remember my first CD player. Being able to see how much time was remaining on a track was great. Once I had itunes, I constantly set the display to show time remaining. So my question is, does anyone find showing time elapsed useful when listening to music? That's all my current car stereo displays and I find it utterly worthless. It would seem to me without context its would be useless for most people, unlike time remaining where you know how long til the song is over.

Weigh in on this most important of matters.

For songs, I don't much find either useful, unless I want to start at a certain point. For podcasts and audio books, time elapsed is useful for finding your place again... time remaining is good in the car if you arrive at your destination before a chapter is over, to gauge whether you sit in the driveway and finish the story or save it for later.

You're missing the "I don't care how long the song is." option.

Both are usually completely irrelevant, but if I need to know the time within a track, whether I need elapsed or remaining depends upon what I need the time for.

No, I'm not. If you can't think of a theoretical situation where you'd prioritize one, your imagination is lacking.

The only time I've ever been concerned about how long a song is was so I could mix it with a C25k track.

It was very useful back in the day, when we made mix tapes.

The only time in recent memory I used it was some song felt like it had gone on too long and I was like "How long have i been going through this?"

True dat, but that was 20 years ago. We're in the digital era now.

I've always preferred "time remaining" but I have no legitimate reason why.

I haven't listened to a CD in ages. This combined with the fact that my iPhone displays Time Elapsed and Time Remaining simultaneously means I'm beyond such mundane concerns.

I prefer time remaining and switch it every chance I can. It is similar to having the toilet paper face a certain way.

I prefer Time Remaining. That way if a song sucks, I know how much longer I have to endure listening.

Of course this makes no sense if it's your own music, cause you probably wouldn't have songs that suck so hard in your own collection.

There's a right and wrong way to have the toilet paper facing.

Well I find I'm not always in the mood for any song in my library.

Ah yes, that's when it's time to upgrade your library!

I hoard songs, and then am annoyed when they come up on shuffle. Even if I don't much like it, I can't bring myself to trash it... but unlike dusty albums that sit in dark corners waiting to be played, in iTunes they pop up randomly. I have to set my playlists to ignore certain genres altogether.

In your hand, yes.

On the roll: if you have a mischievous cat or kid, it's probably a good idea to have it roll down on the side facing the wall.

Sometimes its very important to know how long a song is.

Hudson Hawk - Swinging On A Star - YouTube
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

You need to use the spray bottle on your kid properly.

If it's Eric Clapton's song Cocaine, then time remaining would be great, so I know how long I have to suffer through that waste of a song.

You're right. You really should be listening to the J.J. Cale original.

May he rest in peace.

Jumping into this late but: Time elapsed. No question. I understand wanting to see the time remaining in principle under certain circumstances but can't fathom tracking song times differently than actual time as a general rule. I.E. it is 18:06 right now, NOT -05:54. Keep it standardized, dammit!
