My favorite changes a few times a year. Currently it's The Stooges - Dirt from their Fun House album.
iTMS doesn't have anything by the Stooges earlier than Raw Power, too bad.
A small clip is available from Amazon, but not enough to do the song justice.

too many great songs, but if I had too choose, this one would be in the top 10.
"Paint it blacK" by the R. tones. However, no good version of it are found in Itunes. There are these crappy live recordings.

Ah Tenacious D. What became of them? Isn't there a movie in the works?
Anyway, to know the best song in the world, you'd have to kinda at least have an idea of all the kinds of music there are in the world. In other words, a truly idiotic premise. Maybe you wanna say what song do you like the most? Or what's number one in your iTunes playcount.
Mine's: Fast Forward into Dub by Mad Professor, at 38 times.

Shortcut To Moncton, off the 1996 album Scenery & Fish, by the currently hiatus-ed I Mother Earth. There are terribly few 7+ minute moments of pure melodic rock bliss in the world, and IME penned at least 4 or 5 of them from their four albums. The 15-minute live version is/was a thing of awe and wonder. I warn you: if you're gonna listen to this song, turn up the volume and have an Appleton's and coke. You'll see what I mean.
Anyways, it's been my namesake since 1998 or so and hasn't led me astray yet.

Ah, and I missed the "No Tenacious D" requirement in the first post. Oops. I tend to ignore/forget at least 30% of what people say. More if I don't like you.

Ah crap... Iv been beaten to it twice now...
as soon as I saw this thread title "tribute" immediately popped into my head... And now it wont stop playing, thanks
OK, for my real answer I was going to link to "stairway to heaven" by Led Zeppelin, but iTunes is to crappy to have it. All it has is sh!ty remakes. thats why i prefer to "steal music" from limewire.

It's one of the better covers (although none can touch the original). Here's an excellent live version by the songwriter himself. You know it's a great song when it can survive this.

Oh, and I know that "Best Song in the World" doesn't involved changing one's mind every other day (ball-less flip-floppers in the thread notwithstanding ), but it certainly can have competition. For that, I nominate the incredible Jeff Buckley's Lover, You Should've Come Over, which is right besides Shortcut To Moncton as my favourite song of all time, and hands-down wins the title of Best Love Song In the History of the Universe.
I just had to point it out, since there was so much sh!t being tossed around as "Best Song in the World" that I needed to bring some reality back into the game.

The best song is The Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley.
Lyrics that are perfectly congruent with his lush melodies. Not to mention that he had the voice of an angel.
Check it out if you've never heard it...let it grow on you and you'll be hooked.
Chris.

Which Buckley tune? Can't say as I care either way, because both of them are personal favourites, but I'm curious.
And good call on Tones of Home! That's always been one of my fav Blind Melon tunes, although I think Mouthful of Cavities would have to take it for me.

Here are a few of my favorite songs, and I have to say 'Tenacious D's Tribute is one of them but I won't mention it so I don't irritate the original poster, so please disregard that part of this statement.
These are not in any particular order, and some are favorite seasonal, or newly found favorites.
Boom Boom, John Lee Hooker
I love cover songs as well as the originals.
Come as You Are, Caetano Veloso
Come as You Are, Nirvana
I like most every song on that album.
-
Wipe Out, The Surfaris
The Smoothie Song, Nickel Creek
Angels & Demons, Toby Lightman
How about some Christmas music recommendations,
The Nutcracker Suite, The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Santa Baby, Eartha Kitt
Carol of the Bells, Danny Wright
And then there is the Trans Siberian Orchestra.
Queen of the Winter Night, TSO
Christmas Eve, TSO
Christmas Canon, TSO
I hope you enjoy a few of these.

There is a song by LIVE, which I love and does the same to me. It's called "Lightning Crashes"
Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
"Lightning crashes, an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now, to the baby down the hall
Oh now feel it comin back again
Like a rollin thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin from the center of the earth again
I can feel it.
Lightning crashes, a new mother cries
This moment shes been waiting for
The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris, presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide"
LIVE, Lightning Crashes
