hiya all

i have a niece that needs a crash course on basic html/webdesign...

she has 1 week where she can go anywhere to learn... any ideas?

she is in upstate NY

When you say crash course, what are you referring to? There's lots to HTML, far more than you could easily learn in a week, especially without any prior knowledge. What's the reasoning behind this?

I think ironknee is looking for a literal class that stuffs as much Web design know-how into a week as possible. Like Big Nerd Ranch's bootcamps, only more beginner-level. I imagine such a thing must exist, but I don't know of any, and certainly not any in New York.

I'd just give her a ton of books and lock her in a room until she could produce an attractive and standards-compliant Web site. (Adjust plan to accommodate Geneva Conventions as needed.)

I can't imagine actually absorbing all the information in a one-week class. The class I took was a whole semester and I'm still learning.

Lynda.com isn't really that expensive. I got a free trial when I picked up my copy of CS4 and decided to continue it for another month. For 25 bucks (which is, I imagine, cheaper than any class) you have unlimited access to their entire library for the month. You can also learn a few things while your niece is picking up HTML. I just checked and the XHTML training looks decent enough and is about 3.5 hours. It also has a little bit of CSS and basic JavaScript thrown in (for things like rollovers).

Why take a class.

For the basics this comic book style book:

Has the basic info, first 300 pages slow. Lacks in positioning, but is a good intro. Can be done in one week. I did up to 80 pages a day.

Recommend this book as follow-up:

This is an excellent book with cross-browser compatible patterns to create web designs. There's everything in this book you need to know about html and css. A bit dry maybe, but solid and concentrated.

I don't recommend the w3.org "courses". Created by a rhetorical anti-talent, and probably only good to be fed to a computer. Boring is an understatement. You'll need artificial resuscitation after only a few pages.
