Try disabling the Safe Sleep feature and see if it happens.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

in Terminal.app

I was experiencing a similar problem and was wondering if it well ever show up on the forums. I was having problems with my macbook freezing (only mouse would move, but nothing clickable) from sleep. The only way for me to restore was to either try putting back to sleep or hard shutdown. I began to notice that the airport icon would not show up when these problems would happen. The only think new was I had applied the newest security update and "surprise" it had an airport patch. Did you happen to apply the new security update. I have since did an archive and install to restore 10.4.7 but without the update and since have had no problems.

Are you attached to a server on the network? If you are attached to a server and you put the machine to sleep, when you wake it up, the machine will be confused trying to communicate with the server it lost contact with. The timeout in the OS is way too long for this, so sometimes the machine can be stuck for up to 5 minutes. Try force quitting and relaunching the Finder to try to fix this.

Well, I guess it wasn't a security update issue. The moster seemed to rear it ugly head today. Same thing as before, computer fell asleep, mouse awakens, display comes back but, mouse moves, nothing else. I closed lid to put asleep. After nearly 30 sec, computer was asleep, awoke and all is now well. I am pretty new to macs so I am not sure what it all means but hopefully you guys can help.
