Is it customary for girls to pay for half of the date?

I've heard lots of stories about European guys and gals splitting the costs of a date. In America and in Russia, the guy is expected to pay for the girl. Dinner, movie, club, drinks, etc.

funny you ask. one of the girls I know--she isn't Dutch--has a Dutch boyfriend. Actually, they're 'married', sort of. It is some kind of 'partnership' thing I don't quite understand. no ring, no ceremony, perhaps not even documents. He makes her pay half, and apparently that is the standard in Holland.

heheh--if these guys came to the States and tried to get the girl to pay half, they'd laugh in their faces.

but like SAS, I also expect to pay 100% if I'm the one asking.

To offer a serious reply.. I always paid, unless the date would insist otherwise, and then it was usually a 50/50 split. Some women may find men paying offensive. (Go figure.)

Maybe it's who I've dated in the past, but they tended to insist on paying half. But it was more like I'll cover dinner if you cover the movies sort of thing. On rare ocassions I would be allowed to pay for everything.

I've been with my girlfriend for several years now and we just alternate. Yesterday I invited her for dinner, today we're going sailing and she's paying for the picnic basket.

And I always want to pay because I think the man is supposed to this (ok, maybe I'm a little bit old-school).

I would never make a girl i went out with pay for anything. I mean its just being a gentleman right? Its still customary to pay for the woman and like hold doors right?

I always pay. I dunno, it's just a thing I have... call me old fashioned... it's usually a matter of who can get their money out first, with my girlfriend... she hates when I pay for everything, and tries to pay for me... Then it's a matter of reimbursing later on, if *I* get the cash out first. It balances nicely actually.

I simply don't feel comfortable having my date pay for me unless it's a special occasion or he absolutley insists. I don't like feeling indebted, and since I'm still a student (and so are they =) it seems unfair to ask them to pay for me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

If I invite someone (be it romantic or platonic)... I'm paying. But if they insist on pitching in, I won't throw a fit about it either. And if someone invites me out, I don't have a problem with them paying for me.

It's ok to take turns. I much prefer that than whipping out the calculator and splitting it down to the penny... hardly a nice way to end a good meal.
