Cody, I never thought you'd be so bigoted. When properly cared for, cats are cleaner than dogs (a properly cleaned litter box does NOT smell, either, no matter who sniffs). Indoor cats do NOT pick up the toxoplasmosis parasite, either.

The problem is not cats themselves, but the people who keep them, but don't keep them well. I've had cats live to be over 21 years old-that's PEOPLE years-because they were indoor cats with good medical care and decent food. Outdoor cats don't last nearly as long because they get into fights, get mauled by feral dogs, get run over, etc. And of course they breed like...well like cats, and that's bad for everyone. A properly cared for cat that is not breeding stock in a controlled blood line should be neutered or spayed-they're more comfortable and they live longer.

So the problems cited in the British poll are caused by OUTDOOR cats. Outdoor cats can bring in toxoplasmosis. And outdoor cats are the ones that mess in people's yards and gardens, and the ones that dig in people's trash.

The thrust should not be "I hate..." anything except the people who dump cats, let them roam, and otherwise don't care for them. Pets are a responsibility-if you don't have it in you to carry out that responsibility, get a stuffed bear, not a living thing.

for those who say you can't bath a cat: wusses. It's not that hard.

that said, now that I live in an urban area my cats are indoors and flea-free, so I don't need to. They're very clean.

I'm experimenting with different litter for them to see what works best, so far I've found a flushable pellet that's pretty good.

What I think messes up most cat owners is keeping the litter in the bathroom with a shower that gets used. The moisture in the air activates the litter AND the smell.

Cannot wait to refinish my basement (currently all kinds of junk bad for kitties down there) and put the litterbox down there more out of the way.

also, can you train a dog to dust your ceiling beams?

Too bad this tread got offline. I think the world is made up with cat lovers and dog lovers and like their animals ... they don't get along. I've had dogs and cats and it comes down to taking care of them. Right now I have 7 cats (all were abandoned) and they are the greatest friends. Yes, I have to clean litter boxes everyday, mop floors everyday, and be sure they have their shots. They basically stay inside unless I take them out and watch them so they can catch a few lizards.
And yes they smell (what "animal" doesn't). Even my CATS CEO has to be told sometimes.
So .. so much for my rambling (I'm mellowing out with the "Moody Blues") ... to each their own .. that is what makes the world go round!
