What toppings do you like to put on your oatmeal? I'm talking about the real stuff here, not instant Quaker stuff - no disrespect intended towards Wilf Brimley (the oatmeal guy).

edit: thats not true, I also put chunks of banana on top sometimes.

Honey, if it's slow-cooking rolled oats. Occasionally we make the Scottish cut oats (the grainy stuff you have to boil for awhile). Then milk or cream and a little butter are good.

I don't eat oatmeal, but if I did I'm sure I'd like bananas on it. But there's something about the texture of oatmeal that sort of makes me gag. Come to think of it, same with bananas. So I guess oatmeal with bananas would be the ultimate gagfest. It would make for an amusing breakfast.

So to answer your question, apple. Maybe a Pink Lady or a Pacific Rose, peeled of course. Then I'd probably dump the oatmeal and just eat the apple.

A little spun honey or maple syrup if I am making it from scratch. (My ex-wife used to put chocolate chips in from-scratch oatmeal. Yuck!) Although I tend to buy the pre-packaged stuff quite a bit but it is McCann's and the flavorings are natural, not artificial.

For those of you that eat steel-cut oats, try browning one cup of oatmeal in a pan with a couple tablespoons of butter first. The oatmeal gives off this wonderful caramel smell. Also, add some whole milk to the water you're cooking the oats in. You'll have a much richer tasting oatmeal.

Neil Gaiman once posted his World's Best Porridge Recipe. Here it is:

Having experimented with porridge recipes for years now, this one sort of came together in a bunch of "what if I tried..."s that actually worked.

You need two kinds of oats for it to work. Normal rolled oats (not instant oats), and also steel-cut oats (I use McCanns but I'm sure any brand would do).

(Okay. It's not Healthy, though. Or Sensible. I feel like I ought to mention that. It's the sort of porridge I'd break out to impress guests with, rather than eat every morning.)

Begin with a saucepan. Take a generous couple of tablespoonfuls of butter, and melt them in the saucepan over a low light.

Add about a tablespoonful of McCann's Steel Cut Oats. Let it start to cook in the butter. Add about three-quarters of a cupful of normal rolled oats, and a little less than half a teaspoon of coarse seasalt. Let it all cook in the butter, on a low heat, stirring it around a bit with a wooden spoon. Don't let it burn. Pretty soon, everything will start to smell like oatmeal cookies, and the oats will be browning well, and will have absorbed all the butter, and people will be saying "That smells nice, are you cooking something?" (If it goes black and people ask if they should open the windows, you let it burn. Start again.)

At this point add a couple of cups of boiling water. Bring it back to the boil and "spirtle" (stir vigorously). Let it cook for about ten minutes over a medium to low heat, stirring whenever you remember. Somewhere in there I normally add a little more water, and as it thickens at the end, I stir more.

After about ten minutes, it'll be done. Put it into a bowl. Drizzle real maple syrup on. Pour thick cream over that. Put spoon in. Eat.

(I suppose the maple syrup can be replaced with sugar or honey or no sweetener at all. The steel cut oats add some texture to the whole. The frying the oats gently in butter is there to make you feel guilty and seems to make the whole thing work.)

I'm usually not a big fan of oatmeal, I've had a lot of bad times with it.

When I HAVE to eat it, I usually like the brown sugar flavors.

if the texture is thick and gooey i'd have plain, non-sweet oatmeal. i'm really picky about the texture of oatmeal for some reason. to runny and i can't mouth it

i take my oatmeal with seasonal fruits and berries. nothing else.

blackberry
raspberry
apple (and okay, maybe a dash of cinnamon)
persimmon
nectarine
peach

fruit goes in right after oatmeal is ready - hot and steamy - stir. let it settle for a few minutes. and dig in.

You’re not alone!

I like sweet oatmeal with brown sugar (sometimes I put raisins in it, too), but I also like salty oatmeal. Wouldn’t put butter on it, though, but that’s just because I don’t really like butter.

I don’t put anything on oatmeal, though, that’s just strange. The sugar or salt and the raisins are cooked with the oatmeal.

Ooh, salt and raisins does sound good. I'll have to give that a try sometimes.

The reason I put stuff on the oatmeal rather than cooking it in it is that while I like it salty, Jessi likes it sweet so we each have to flavor our oatmeals individually.
