cool idea, but i don't think a translucent gui is possible in OSX... correct me if I'm wrong, cause I'd love to see it.

Is that a...TextEdit icon? What's that doing there?

Anyway, I don't know if it's possible, but after seeing that Section 9 theme a few weeks back I can't really say that I have a firm grasp on what is or isn't possible.

I don't even see a theme in the picture, all I see is an Explorer window and Konfabulator for Windows-style widget... hardly enough showing to even tell if it's a theme.

What you seem to be asking for is translucent window borders, which I'm sure IS possible because if Unsanity can make windows completely translucent, I'm sure just the borders can be made to be as well.

I hate to say it but that looks stunning. Although no part of the theme, the text looks razor sharp I must say. Longhorn may surprise us all I fear........

It's just a good clean rip-off of the OS X metal windows. Something similar might work fine on OS X, but that transparency would be a problem... might be able to pull something off with the bevels...? I know people have gotten parts of the metal windows transparent before.

Wow, Microsoft is sure getting good at copying Apple the TextEdit icon is directly stolen (except that the yellow pad behind it is slightly de-saturated), the middle light source down the window, and the drop-down magnifying glass for the search field. Jeebus.

I must admit that it (namely, the translucency) looks stunning though.

You need to learn to read. Follow the link on the Spymac site that says the original came from Deviant Art. Then, read that Microsoft did not make this skin:

So what's the story here? Is this really Longhorn or just some PC user's mock-up? If it is Longhorn then Microsoft has gone far past the "copying Apple's ideas" and is basically blatantly stealing the Mac GUI. I mean, Jesus... moving the task bar to the top of the screen and having it take on the same shape as the menubar? Please...

My hunch is that this is a theme someone is using. As bad as Microsoft can be, I don't think they'd be that stupid to virtually duplicate the Mac OS. Yeah, I'm sure Longhorn will have some very compelling features, but however good it may be, we know that it will never be a Mac. It's like how people without pets think that people with pets are insane when they treat their dog, for example, like their child. (Yep, I have a little Toy Fox Terrier, Bridget, and for all intents and purposes, shes my daughter) If you had one, you'd realize that it's perfectly natural. Same as with the Mac. If you're a Mac nut, no matter how pissed off at Apple you may sometimes get, and no matter how many Apple naysayer's you hear, the thought of switching to windows makes you feel like you've got a slice of bologna in each shoe.

Now then, as far as the first screen shot is concerned, if you can live without the transparency, (which I do agree is possible and will likely be available in future versions of ShapeShifter and ThemePark) then Androo's theme, Auckwa, looks VERY close to what is pictured. In fact, at first glance, my impression was that someone had copied Auckwa.

Just my 2

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

I'm not a programmer, but perhaps with the new Core Graphics foundation in Tiger transparent windows like that will be possible. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Tiger has some not so obvious big improvements when it comes to the GUI. Who knows, and don't flame me for this, but maybe Apple will pull one more rabbit out of the hat and have built in themeing!

the drop shadow is the only problem, like when you make the console transparent.

first the text edit icon is a mod for Konfabulator a Windows-style widget... so thats not a part of this so called longhorn. 2nd i asked around and i cant get a strong answer if this is or isnt windows alone.. 3rd its a taskbar just pulled to the top of the screen you can do that with any win OS. but if this is a version of windows i can install it on my PC and give out SS so someone can make a theme for OSX. ( im not to good in theme park )

You do remeber we used to have a semi-trans title bar right? its already possible. ts just down to what apple has currently programmed. E.G if metal will accept transparent masks and stuff which I doubt it would. But nothing about osx makes this impossible

Why isn't transparacy possible. Unsanity has that option in their WindowShade Haxie. Please not, I'm neither a themer nor a programmer so bear with me if I say something stupid...

Here an example of Unsanity's Transparancy (the Apple Logo is my desktop):

If you'd look a little closer at the screen from the start of this thread, you'll see that the window border is transparant, but the inside pane isn't. I believe we're talking about that specific effect - which BTW I haven't seen done on a mac yet.

thanks for the explanation. Shame though it's not possible yet. Why though is this possible on XP, I though Windows didn't do transparencies yet?

I've taken another look myself, and what I like furthermore, is the layering of the window : there's the frame, the black part that's deeper and the white part that's on top of all - at least if I read the dropshadow right. We might be able to do that part on a mac theme ?

BTW, the TextEditor window looks superb IMHO.

Well of course a programmer could make his app have characteristics like this - a transparent border. You can make Butler's abbreviation window have a transparent border so there is nothing stopping any programmer adding it to their app except all the extra effort.

First off, I hate windows. I work with winblows everyday at school (sigh), and it makes me that much more eager to get home to my mac. Windows always has been and always will be 4 steps behind mac. By the time longhorn comes out we will be in version 12.3.4. Anyways, the theme on the windows pics is OK; however, we can do much better on a mac, imo. Transparency is possible in most cases, save a few places like scroll bars/arrows etc. And while themepark doesn't display the transparency correctly in it's preview most of the time it works fine in use. A metal window can be transparent it just takes a bit of work. As soon as I get home I'll post a link a guikit with transparent metal windows. They look fine and work well, but they aren't polished or anything, just proving a point.

Longhorn may have some 'neat' features but by the time it gets released, if it gets released, they will be outdated by the last years mac os, so in the long run, windows are still for solitare, and even then macs are better.

Maybe some sort of transparency effect is planned for ShapeShifter 10.3?

It's supposed to be a big release...

The title bars in 10.2 were transparent when not selected yet the rest of the window was solid, seen as the title bar is part of the window border then yes this is entirely possible at a technical level its just down to what shapeshifter can do.
