I was hoping to backup some files on a USB storage device. Is there a way to encrypt these files? Will FileVault work; if so, how? Someone suggested I need to purchase third party software from GPS? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

Make an X MB encrypted R/W disk image using DIsk Utility, then store it on the USB Memory "device". This is essentially what FileVault does.

the read-write encrypted disk image is an excellent way to encrypt files.

the password is in your keychain, delete it there if you want it to ask every time you mount it
