like many times before... this line showed up in the status bar:

Receiving image (0 bytes of 131 bytes, 0 bytes/sec): next_topic3.gif

I know some of you have the same problem... please post if you have the same info showing in the status bar when your IE hangs.

Yep, happens to IE about once every 2-3 days on MacNN but also on a few other sites. IE is trash, however it is also greatly supported and supporting so I can't give it up yet. OW also chokes on the images here at MacNN as well as some other sites.

What are you to do, browsers for the mac suck for now.

MacNN and these forums are just about the only thing that crashes my I.E.

It is pathetic.

This has happened to me as well. Sucks, but restarting the browser seems to help somehow.

Yeah I get it too, things like yellowpage.gif and the like. Have to force quit my browser and reload it.

I happy to be supporting OmniWeb bu using it at MacNN, but I wish I only had to use one browser. IE dies here, and almost exclusively here, and OmniWeb craps out or poorly renders lots of other places- and it is SLOW. I'd love to use OmniWeb full time, but it ain't up to the challenge.

I do wish MacNN would work out the problems with the default browser on the computers this site is geared to.

Just a note to say that I too have quite a few problems with IE on the site...although IE crashes so much anyway that I don't know if the blame lies anywhere near MacNN, or a little closer to Redmond

I hang or Force Quit daily, both before and after the upgrade (Cube, IE, dialup at home). Out of hundreds of bookmarks, only MacNN sites are a problem. At work (Dell, IE, T1 line), there is no issue.

Why hasnt this been fixed or at least explained to us? This has been a problem for months. Its one thing in OS X where I can just restart the program but this hang in Classic makes me have to reboot sometimes.

Its past annoying and a fix should be found considering how many people have found this thread and others like it, there's gotta be even more people it happens to that aren't posting.

Yes, I'm trying to get hold of someone at our ad provider that can take a look at the code and let us know if that's what's causing the problem.

Sorry for the inconvenience, I know it's been a while.

I'm using IE6 in WinXP and it never crashes. Must be a problem with the Mac version of IE.

The site does indeed get 'slow' pretty frequently, with pages taking over 30 seconds to load over broadband.

The pages do eventually load - I don't think the server ever completely stops responding.

Crashed 6 times in a row just now trying to load different threads in IE. Posting this in OmniWeb.

Has it gotten worse for anyone else?

(Edit: Emptied IE's cache and haven't crashed once since. Hmmm...)

I think the reason IE crashes so much on MacNN is because IE 5.1 has a problem handling big CGI files like this forum, but I'm not positive on that tho

guys it's the ads that are crashing MacNN. Here is why.

1) it doesn't happen everytime you load MacNN
2) MacNN will crash on its homepage, its team page, its forums, its reviews page, etc
3) It's one of the rotating ads because if it was the static ads it would crash everytime.
4) It doesn't happen on any other site
5) This is a Mac ONLY related issue to IE. I dont know if it affects OS 9 though.

So Administrators, get to work, cuz u all know what's a matter now =) (Watch, go ad free for one day and no one will crash)

I still have not crashed since clearing my cache a week ago.

Maybe not the solution for everyone, but it's worth a try.

I was trying to open this tread just then and then IE 5.3 showed me the beach ball.

This time the status bar showed this:
