Well if they havent called you by now you are not!

http://news.com.com/2102-1022_3-5770...=st.util.print

But if they suck up all the geewhiz geniuses for writing their "amazing" code why do they get kicked in their collective asses by smaller outfits, I wonder...

PS: yah, that /. post got me thinking about this.

I saw that, what a bunch of dorks.

I have been to interviews where they want to test me at the end at things like photoshop and whatnot. I always say no because I find it insulting. I mean they see I did the website for Mac cosmetics, GE canada and Fex Ex yet they still wonder if I know how to make an animated gif??

They want to see not just WHAT you can do, but HOW FAST you can do it.

You shouldn't be insulted for someone to ask you to perform what you say you can.

One test ask me to make an animated gif from home in a week. That's one hell of a speed test.
The other ask me to create a new layer in Photoshop.

Insulting and stupid.

While I see your point, what Microsoft (and many other tech companies out there) does is very different. The "pop quizzes" generally are brain teasers and not debugging some code or a function writing exercise.

When fresh out of school, I interviewed for a few tech companies and some had these types of brain teasers at the end of the interviews. I got most of them within the allotted time, but I remember thinking it was a pretty dumb interview tactic. If you want to know how smart I am, ask me some intelligent questions. If you want to know how I do under pressure, you'll have to take my word for it or ask my references as watching me struggle to answer your silly little brain teaser will hardly give a sense of how I look when I do homework, much less how I handle pressure.

Guess what, BOTH they did even when I said no to the test. I didn't take the job though.

Were you interviewing with HR, Recruiting or the hiring manager?

To the linked article, Gretchen Ledgard is among my favorite people at MS. She's very helpful, even to people in streams of the MS recruiting process other than technical.
