This has happened twice now, confirming my suspicions that it wasn't a disc error. New DVDs (Casino Royale and Stanger Than Fiction), both released just this month, will not play in my Toshiba DVD player. They will play in my Mac though. And yes, I tested older DVDs and they play just fine, so its not a broken player. I have searched the net and haven't seen anything about this. Any ideas whats up with these discs?

Have no idea.
However, you can always download AnyDVD (for Windows, yes,) and make a copy of your DVD that should be able to play on your DVD player.

just because the older ones play doesn't mean there isn't something wrong with your dvd player. we rent dvd's at work and haven't heard of any complaints on these two titles.

Fair enough. Since it hasn't been reported on a wide scale, I'm sure that most DVD players are handling these titles. But clearly somthing is different about them that my player is not equipped to deal with. Some new 'protection' has been implemented by the studios that renders them unplayable for me.

No, I didn't accidentally spend twice as much on a blu-ray or hd-dvd. Theyre straight up, working DVDs that play perfectly in Apple's DVD player. Actually, I didn't buy them at all. They came from Netflix.

Ya, I have been having the same problem. Started about two weeks ago. Casino Royale and Pursuit of Happyness will not play on my 4 year old dvd player. Everything else plays fine. Even The Departed plays fine. (came out about a month ago) There is some new copyright code that discs started using about two weeks ago. My DVD player is a Mitsibushi (which actully was produced by Toshiba) O well it was about time for an upgrade anyways. HD DVD anyone?

I have a sneaking suspicion it might have something to do with some new copy protection that is on those disks not playing nice with older players.
Check if your DVD player has a rom update or contact Toshiba support for them to confirm the issue.

I am having the exact same problem as described here, but you can add the new Rocky movie to that list. What makes this even stranger is that, we have a super old apex dvd player and it plays all of these movies just fine. Just the newest ones will not play on the Mitsubishi dvd player. Im thinking it has to be the new code you guys are talking about. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix it, other than replacing the dvd player?
