I'm not really sure why there are no Avatar's. It was a decision made by the leadership, which is OK by me. What we have here instead is the Signature at the bottom of each person's post. It also reveals a lot about the person.

because everybody's using 2400 BPS modems and it would make the text boxes too big or something.

some of the threads here are just way to long already. With big pictures you would a lot more scrolling to do.

You know what would be really cool? an avatar that is Mac OS X dock style. It's a little small pic under your user name or in your signature box. When you move your mouse over the pic it enlarges like a genie.

While cool, I'm not sure Javascript is going to reach that level anytime soon.

Put your pants on.

But seriously, I don't think having a dozen low class .gifs on my screen makes the forum feel any "warmer." If anything it attracts illiterate teens like mosquitoes to a bug light.

"Look! Crappy Pictures! Must...join...MacNN. I bet they'll be sooo impressed with my AOL-inspired clipart!"

Oh, but then again I'm missing out on all that japanimation $hit. Gee, what if we could have audio clips with 'em? I just can't get enough bug eyed freaks yelling "YU-GI-OH!" Throw in a few animated pubescent 'toon teens in trailerwear and a "You Go Girl" caption. That'd really class this place up!

The freakish parade of topics like "Hold hands on the first date?" and "Like my mom is, like, a total space cadet" will bathe us in the wisdom we've been lacking all this time.
Do you want forgiveness or respect?

Yeah, I prefer the sigs over the avatars. Avatars are way too 90s.

Of all the forums I've been on, this is the most elegant. This place has nice and comfy feel to it; and it is primarly (sp?) due to no Avatars.

I don't know of any JavaScript which can enlarge smoothly, but it's possible to enlarge an image on rollover (except in IE) with nothing but CSS. Only problem is, it jumps between sizes.

Nevertheless, Demonhood is right. We held a vote a while back between sigs and avatars; sigs won.

Yeah, but enlarging like that also pushes other content away, which is ugly. A tooltip would be cool, though.

Go to the spymac forums and you will see em. Basically, they are square images that are usually placed directly under your username in all of your posts.

Thanks. They're nice, but not sure how they make that much of a difference in the over all feel... maybe it's just me, though.

I prefer sigs to avatars, although some avatars I have seen are pretty cool.

Though Sigs are fine I do like Avatars too. I like their location at the top of ones post as opposed to the bottom end. Also like the slightly larger and better proportioned 80x80 size a bit more too.

The only thing I wish is more people used sigs, if anything because it's basically how i recognize people's posts..

it's funny because I'm not really the kind to remember people's faces, but I almost always remember icons/avatars/sigs... sadd.....

Heheh I think I can recognize faces pretty well But yeah...
