I am ready for a new Powerbook. I was thinking that it might be good strategy to order it on Monday. If new Powerbooks are released on Tuesday and they are slightly less expensive, Apple should provide price protection. But if the new Powerbook are slightly more expensive, then Apple will substitute the new machine at no additional charge.

What do you think?

Chris,

For those who were planning to buy thier next PowerBook from the Apple Store, I think you strategy is spot on. I'm sure Apple would allow you a "few minutes" after the announcement of any major changes to modify the order

OTOH I _never_ purchase a display (LCD or CRT) mail order because I want to be able to _see_ the display's quality _before_ I walk out of the store. So, I'll be anxiously awaiting Apple's pronouncement(s) and ready to hit up my local Apple vendor(s) ASAP

I'm feeling the upgrade itch right now but I am going to wait until I can get Tiger for free before I buy again. Since I am a hobbyist, I can afford to wait.

Well. If the rumors are close to being true, the next round of Powerbooks will be little more than speed bumps. And while I am happy to get a few more megahertz, it would be hard for Apple to raise prices without adding significant features. I suspect new machines will come in at the same prices as the current ones.

Here's your strategy:

1. Extract credit card from wallet.

2. BUY! BUY! BUY!

3. There is no three.

When a true genius appears in the world you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him. -- Jonathan Swift.
