10.3.9 fixed the fan revving problem introduced by 10.3.8 on my PowerMac Dual 2.0 G. I reset the processor speed to automatic, instead of highest and i have not heard the fans rev yet. In 10.3.8 the fans would rev if i just scrolled a web page.

I don't want to get my hopes up, but I think you might be right.

My DP2.5GHz has always been a regular vacuum cleaner (especially with those damn animated GIFs in Safari). Now, however, the fans do seem more subdued, especially when the Energy Saver is on Automatic. I've even got an AnandTech.com page open with tons of animated GIFs, plus the smilies to the right of this message box.

We'll see how it plays out over the next few days, but here's hoping...

...and hoping that Tiger doesn't re-introduce the out-of-control fan bug again.

I updated my 12" PB (1.33 Ghz) from 10.3.8.
I actually forgot to repair permissions beforehand.

But all went well!

I have the bookmarks added as well but Safari crashes every time I try to go into bookmarks or even to drag one off the menu bar.

Try killing SMBL in Library, application support.

Safari is working fine now. Did the combo update and repaired permissions. It let me kill the bookmarks and didn't crash.

All is well now. For about 15 days.

For those having problems with Safari crashing on launch, do a search for Acidsearch.bundle and trash it.

If you have acidsearch installed, remove that and try again.

I'm updating now. I really hope they fixed the problem in the 1.3beta (and 2.0 in the Tiger beta) of Safari with SimpleMachines forums. I have a feeling it's still broken though...

I tried removing all the suggested plug-ins, reapplied the combo updater and safari still crashes. I also noticed that none of my Java applications are running. This isn't good.

Read my post above on deleting SMBL. That should help the java-related crashes. Or use the combo if still having problems.

Wow, this update has definitely improved the performance of safari for me. Not sure why-- it just seems so much faster displaying pages and scrolling. Even pulling down menus in the finder seems faster as well. This is great considering my machine is a bottom of the line machine from 4 years ago...

Safari runs great here.

However, the only reason I installed 10.3.9 was to get rid of the slow login bug (when postscript fonts are installed). Unfortunately, 10.3.9 hasn't fixed it very well, despite what the update notes say. Logging into an account with postscript fonts installed still took about 60 seconds, whereas other users on machine take about 10 seconds to log in.

Update on the slow login issue:

I deleted my font caches as recommended by John Gruber (http://daringfireball.net/2005/03/font_caches) - something that the OS X update should have done on its own, since it was fixing a related bug - and now my login time is under 5 seconds. Presumably, this update will keep the bad cache files from forming and keep login times fast from now on.

[If you have to do this too, note that you probably don't need to delete the fontAnnex file. Start-up might actually take longer if OS X has to recreate that file.]

For those of you experiencing Java related issues (i.e. it crashes) reinstalling Security Update-002 seems to fix the problem.

Note: I've tracked down an issue with the handy APE module IceCoffee (v1.4) and Safari 1.3 that results in command-clicking a link (to open in a new window or tab) not working. (Command-double-click does work, though.) Excluding Safari from IceCoffee, or turning it off, allows single-command-clicking work again.

Quick follow up... it seems Safari works just /fine/ on anothe (clean) user account, bah.

Edit: Looks like I fixed it, I dug around and deleted things from my ~/Library, including everything but the Bookmarks.plist from the Safari folder, and everything in the Icons folder. I also opened iGetter and disabled the web browser plugin (that may have been it *shrugs* ).

Azureus needs Java. Java can be fixed by reapplying Security Update-002.

Thanks for the tip, but if I've already installed it via Software Update, how do I go back and reinstall it? It won't let me do that via Software Update as far as I know.

PithHelmet users:

To fix the "break" until an update comes out...

Use Property List Editor or BBEdit to open /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/PithHelmet.bundle/Contents/info.plist

Where you see MaxBundleVersion, change the value to 312. Save and relaunch Safari.

My 12" 867 PB has a new lease of life! Safari scrolls MUCH quicker, and in an ebay section, the search now doesn't give the beachball for 30 seconds, it just does it.

One happy man here.

Safari is much quicker but the bookmarks is still broken. When I hit on something to open tabs, it opens everything on that list, even in nested folders. Not that annoying but still. If it wasn't for the speed improvement, I'd move over to FF.
