definately improved Safari..... makes Safari usable again on some webpages that I could not use Safari with in the past..... specifically on scrolling thru webpages that go on forever. Also 'appears' to be working to block pop-ups that had started becoming annoying again.

Can anyone else confirm that CyberDuck is broken? I'm assuming this is because it uses Java and Cocoa code.

Is 10.3.9 the best incremental upgrade to OS X ever? Survey says: YES.

The combo update is capable of updating earlier versions of 10.3, whereas the regular updater can only update Macs running the last iteration, in the case 10.3.8. Many people have reported over the years that the combo updater can solve problems introduced by the regular update, but I can neither confirm nor deny those reports.

10.3.9 has definitely improved the fan behavior on my DP2.5. I've been putting it thru its paces for hours now, and its far, far better than it was under 10.3.7 or .8

Since this is the last update until Tiger, it should be the best Panther can be.

Hopefully, those of us who cannot or are not buying Tiger (new PMs in a week?) will still get Security Updates, etc. for those critical things. Downloading...

I think the combo updater is a good idea if you are a person that is constantly trying and throwing away software. Or moving huge files on and off of your machine. Or in general, really pushing it.

If not, the regular updater is probably the best. No proof, just my feeling. I did have a problem with an update once and after trying the combo my issue was solved so I generally go with the combo.

Wow! Safari is so much better! You can actually close tabs now when you have a bunch of them opening and rendering in the background. This always drove me crazy before.

OMG... Safari is amazing. It finally matches the speed of IE in Windows!

Guess what... I tried dragging the scroll bar up and down as fast as I could, and Safari kept up with me! For the first time! Hooray.

Finally...

EDIT: I tried resizing windows. Resizing seems to be much faster for me too. Especially Safari ones. There's almost no lag on my iBook G4 1.2!

I had skipped 10.3.8 because of the fan issue on the dualies. After the 10.3.9 quiet fan reports started coming in, I decided to jump on it.

After the combo update, Java 1.4 apps like jEdit and eclipse are working just fine.

And my beloved TextTwist (one of the few applets I run regularly) is also working.

No need to reapply any Java or Security update.

I can't comment on Safari performance because I normally live in Firefox.

Oh, and the fans are quiet. So far.

Updated this morning, via Software Update. No immediate problems. Safari works (and is oh-so snappy), Java works. I did just have one issue where Safari stopped being able to go to new web pages for a while. I'd type in a new URL or hit a link and Safari would just forever try to load it, without anything happening (and I checked in Firefox to make sure that it wasn't my network). But a quit and re-launching of Safari seems to have fixed it for now.

This is worth it if only for the Safari fixes. All the "I'll wait for Tiger" people are crazy.

Cyberduck is alive and well. Versions 2.4.2 and 2.4.3 are running nicely under 10.3.9 .

If you have Java related problems try running the security update 002 again or reinstall Java as described on the front page of www.macfixit.com .

badidea, Truepop, remove the iGetter stuff from ~/Library/InputManagers.

Everybody should take be aware that problems can arise whenever you use stuff that hacks into other applications.

You're right TETENAL, I do have iGetter installed but i also don't want to lose it!
Right now it seems that the combo updater solved my problem - I only had one unexpected quit since then and this without closing a window or tab...

That's your decision. But it's not fair to give Safari a thumbs down because of that. When you are using APEs or fake input managers you know what you are doing and should take the consequences.

I installed the 10.3.9 update from Software Update and Safari won't start. It unexpectedly quits on every launch. Am downloading the combo update now.

Look here and make these folders clear (temporarily to test if you need):

(~)/Library/Application Enhancers/
(~)/Library/InputManagers/

If that doesn't help post the crash log.

I second that. However I can report APE to work flawlessly so far with the update.

standard update via software Update (not combo).

No problems here whatsoever on this iMac DV 400.

Safari is spectacular. Yes, the GIF issue is finally alleviated somewhat - the reply page uses about half the CPU it used to.

the combo updater gives me an invalid checksum. didn't find out the first time b/c I clicked skip and installed the update. After that Safari and some other apple software wouldn't start. However, I downloaded the regular (.8 to .9) updater, installed that, and things seem back to normal.

anyone else getting an invalid checksum on the combo?

Thanks but I don't have either of those folders on my HD

I installed the combo update and Safari still crashes on launch. I fixed permissions and Safari still crashes on launch.

Crap.

Has anyone tried using an OLDER version of PithHelmet with Safari. I didn't like the new version with the menu item so I've been using 0.7.3. Disabled it before I did the install of 3.9 but sure would like PithHelmet back.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've had nothing but problems with Saari since the update...it takes longer to load pages and is at least 25% slower...any ideas on how to fix?...tried resetting, empty cache,...any preferences ok to delete?

Why do I get the feeling Apple should have spent more time beta testing 10.3.9?

It's crappy that you're having a bad experience, but the response to 10.3.9 has been overwhelmingly positive.
