Japanese probe apparently succeeds in landing on asteroid

The Hayabusa probe touched down for only a few seconds on the faraway asteroid — long enough to collect powder from its surface — and lifted off again to transmit data to mission controllers, said Kiyotaka Yashiro, a spokesman for JAXA, Japan's space agency.

But JAXA won't know if Hayabusa actually collected surface samples until it returns to Earth. It is expected to touch down in the Australian Outback in June 2007.

Hayabusa was launched in May 2003 and has until early December before it must begin its 180 million-mile journey home.

Here's a picture of part of the asteroid, with the shadow of the probe:

What I want to know is why they decided to land a motorcycle on an asteroid.

Did you think the Japanese would land spacecrafts on asteroids light-heartedly?
Making sense is overrated.

Because it had been thought that the probe had been lost and so wouldn't be able to complete it's mission in which case this thread could easily have been taken as a dig at the Japanese. But the probe somehow managed to not actually be lost (I'm still a little confused what happened) and is completing its mission after all. Hence, 'seriously' and not 'sarcastically'.

Maybe the Canadian Minister of Defence was right when he said that aliens had been visiting Canada.

Japan just released computer rendered pictures of the spacecraft approaching the asteroid.

Conspiracy theorists have noted the UFO in the corner of the picture....

I'm surprised they didn't land a Hello Kitty on the asteroid. Oh, you laugh, but it probably came up in a meeting.
