I just saw that this morning, cool.. I wish now they'd do the same with the weather icon. They could like it to the top choice in your weather list.

When you hold your finger on text you have typed, a magnifying glass pops up. You can then drag your finger left or right to place the curser where you like.

Anyone know if there is a "mass delete" available in mail or for messages? I wonder if that's a fix that they'll address?

This morning I used the delete function of iPhone's Mail for the first time, and thought the animation was pretty nifty. When you tap the little trashcan icon, the lid opens, and the email folds and flows into the can. A great example of using animation to provide visual confirmation of the user's action (a somewhat similar effect was used in the Newton as well).

Yes, I would like that too. Same goes for time. Both would require an optional feature to set a "home" as default for that icon.

If you hold your finger on a link in Safari it'll popup a black tooltip (like Maps tooltips) with the full link.

Yes - I looked for it after I saw one of the commercials again. I have been using the default planet earth one. I kinda liked the fishies!

Yeah, the same goes for the ring tone they used in the ads. I was looking forward to using it. Oh well, I guess I'll have to settle with "old phone."

I posted this somewhere else, but just in case.....
While it won't sync, it will charge using a firewire iPod cable.

Is the ringtone from the ads the same as the one used during the keynote? If so, that's "Marimba," which is the default sound on the iPhone.

Here's a couple things I discovered:
1. Prolly common knowledge, but when you're typing (and still clumsy like me), you can hold your finger down until you reach the right key, then release.
2. Quicktime movies from web sites actually play in a full screen window which, unlike Youtube or itunes content, can play landscape mode OR vertically. Also has the same zoom functions as other motion media. Doesn't have to be h.264 or mpeg4 btw- plays sorenson encoded media, haven't tried others.
more to come

3. Although you can't cut and paste, you CAN send someone a link to a web page. Click on the web address and click "share", which will open up a new email with the address embedded. Also works in YouTube: the button is next to the Bookmark button.
4. There's an option in general prefs that alllows capslock, which is turned off by default. When enabled, double tap shift key to lock (turns blue), then you can easily send sms' with OMG or THIS FONE ROXX.
5. Here's a quick way to mass delete all those spam messages in one fell swoop: Simply delete the mail account on your phone -- as long as you're next to your syncing computer--, resync and it will automagically re-appear. Also, on a spam note, I can't recommend spamsieve enough. I keep it running on a computer at home. If you tell apple mail to "Remove copy from server when moved from inbox" on pop accounts. No spam will come through because spamsieve sends them to a separate folder. Check your spam at home every once in a while if you need good deal on cialis.
6. If don't have time to record info from someone's biz card, take a snapshot using your camera. Edit the photo later to blow it up (so you can read it), then add the info. I like to take snapshots of menus for takeout - that way you always have a copy of the menu with you
7. Google maps will cache driving directions for you if you know you won't have a signal. When online, create route and do the step by step directions. Each image will be cached for each turn. Don't believe me, turn on airplane mode and check it out. I'm not sure of the cache size but if you need more data for your trip, scroll around at the zoom level you like and it should keep it cached for you.
more to come..

Does the iPhone download lower quality movies from YouTube when it is connected to the Edge network? I bookmarked that skateboarding dog video seen in the iPhone ads. When I played it over WiFi, the quality was amazing. I played it again at work (no WiFi, Edge only) and the video quality was significantly lower.

Yes, I believe that this is true, as you have seen. Kinda wish there was a way to save videos from YouTube to the iPod videos folder.... But, that's a different thread!

A quick way to insert a comma or period is to press and hold your fonger on the [.?123] key and then slide your finger to the key you want and then lift your finger. The keyboard will automatically switch back to the qwerty keyboard.
I've been playing with this typing method today and I find it works really well.

When you are in Safari and you want to type in a new url, it seems you have to scroll all the way to the top. You don't. Just touch the very top of the screen, by the time/battery, and it will jump to the top where you can enter the URL or search Google.

AHHHHHHHHHH - this is a great tip (the period thing) Thank you.
I was a "double-space=period" guy for the last 3 years, and while I still wish they'd implement that, this is much better than 'stop typing, hit 1,2,3, hit period, hit abc, keep typing'
thanks.

google maps and youtube links will open in the youtube and google map iPhone applications.
Does anyone know if it's possible to open a link in a new safari window?

As far as I can tell, you can't purposely open a link in a new window.

That was one of my minor gripes, so I coded up a small workaround.

Just like on Safari on a Mac, typing in an address like apple/trailers will automatically put in the .com in the correct place for you. Based on this you don't have to press the .com button to enter urls. Just type in the domain and safari will automatically .com it for you.
If you're listening to music and the iPhone plays an audio notification it will fade your music down, play the audio notification, and then fade in the music. Very cool.
