I have A Dual 2ghz G5 with 2gb ram, and I was thinking about selling it for a 2ghz intel imac, but then I looked at the mac mini at the same specs, and wasnt sure what to do, seeing as how the mac mini is alot cheaper. What would I gain in what areas? I just want to make the switch for a better future for my desktop seeing as how PPC is getting too out dated.

Go iMac if you can get the money for it. If you were using a Pro Mac before, chances are the mini won't be for you. It's main problems are Hard Drive Space and Graphics.

To expand on this, it depends on what you're doing. The Mac mini absolutely will not be better for 3D games, or for anything with heavy hard disk access. In fact for those things it would be a marked step backwards. If you're mainly doing word processing, web browsing, email, or other standard tasks, the mini will probably be pretty comparable to your G5 as long as you load it up with a couple GB of RAM. If you do want something small, quiet, and energy-efficient, or want to run Windows apps, then the mini wins hands-down.

In short, the mini is not a good choice if you are upgrading just for the sake of upgrading, yet it is better in certain respects. It just depends on what you are hoping to get out of this switch.

You could upgrade to the Mini, sell the G5, and probably profit...

the mini gets a bad rap for not too many good reasons...you could get a faster drive in there if you really need a fast hd, it houses 3gb (plenty for ANYBODY considering a mini in the first place) only thing it cant do is play games...your call, but imo if you already have a monitor, keys, and a mouse and are trying to save a penny or two, the mini is fine.

now to totally flip flop on what i just said, the imac is more bang for the buck (few hundred bucks gets you a lot more).
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Selling a mighty G5 for a lowly mini would be a shame.

I just did this last month: http://forums.macnn.com/65/mac-pro-a...-i-sell-my-g5/

I ended up getting enough for my PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 and my 24" Dell LCD monitor to get a 24" iMac 2.4 GHz. I definitely find the iMac to be more capable than the G5 was. The lack of expandability is somewhat annoying, but not too bad especially as the 320 GB HD it came with is the same size as the two 160 GB HDs I had internally in the G5 (and I switched my external RAID from eSATA to FW800).
