With new low prices on both 12-inch and 15-inch models, there's never been a better time to step up to the power, versatility and style of the latest PowerBook. If computing on the move is your top requirement, then wireless networking with AirPort Extreme will ensure you are always on the go! Enhance your PowerBook's performance with optional RAM upgrades: up to 1.25GB on the 12-inch and up to 2GB on the 17-inch models. You might even consider stepping out in style with a Brenthaven bag to hold your PowerBook and all its accessories. PowerBook now starting at 1,299, these and more - all at the Apple Store.
Did you guys read this
I guess the prices will fall now

Where is that from? They don't sell the 12" with 1.25gb on the US Apple store yet.

UK Apple Website.
They're just acknowledging that yes, a 1GB memory stick CAN be used in the 12" PB.

It's also going to cost you about two-thirds of the price of the machine to add that 1 GB module. I think I'll stick with my measly 640 MB for a while.

The US tech specs page still says
256MB of PC2100 (266MHz) DDR SDRAM (128MB built in and 128MB in SO-DIMM slot); supports up to 640MB (12-inch model)
In fact, the UK page says the same.
http://www.apple.com/uk/powerbook/specs.html
Down at the bottom of the page, left hand side.
Memory
256MB of PC2100 (266MHz) DDR SDRAM (128MB built-in and 128MB in SO-DIMM slot); supports up to 640MB (12-inch model)
256MB or 512MB of PC133 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 1GB (15-inch models)
512MB of PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 1GB (17-inch model)
So, sorry. No, 640mb is still the limit.

This isn't anywhere on the UK site or the US site; in particular, the stores page, the Hot News page, or the PowerBook pages.
A glance at the store confirmed that you weren't correct, but I thought I'd have a more thorough check.
*sigh*

I posted this in another thread already but it might have got lost:
Anybody who wants to get the new 1BG module, here's the link to the people selling it (in German only)
http://www.dsp-memory.de/1gb/
Their phone number is +49 461 1461 66 00 and they do speak English. They also accept international orders.

Right, we all know that a 1GB stick will work with our PB 12"s, but can someone fill us in on the performance boost, and I'm going out on a limb here, but perhaps helps with the heat issue??

Just because it works doesn't mean it's officially supported.
I usually wait until a machine is out of warranty to consider things that aren't supported.

According to the service docs, the 1 GB expansion *is* supported.

I had a long chat with them and according to them the module is officially supported. The only thing that is keeping me back from purchasing this right now is the high price. But imagine a 12" with over 1GB of memory.....wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee

What good is having over a gig of memory, the memory-performance curve starts to hit an asymptote at around 768 MB (unless you are using your PB as a massive database server). Above 1GB in a client machine is not worth much right now, especially considering that 1GB DIMMs are $700+ .

Memory-performance curve of what combination of applications, being used with what data sets, in what fashion?
There isn't one single memory-performance curve, please don't pretend otherwise.

Or a mobile audio or video workstation, no?
Audio requires insane amounts of memory when you're doing any serious work with more than just a couple of tracks, and once the machine starts paging onto the laptop drive, disk i/o performance dies.

You'd wait to try even a memory module? I wouldn't.

Id love to put 2gig's of ram in my TiSD, Does anybody think it'll work?
See I purchased my TiSD in december and I think the ram and one of those hitachi 7200rpm HD's would make a wonderful upgrade for those of us that aren't ready to a upgrade to a new machine if it were announced at WWDC, but of course the price of the ram has to come down first.
Oh well other than that I love my machine.

Exactly.
I've just had opportunity to play with some live video mixing and projection software. It loads whole clips into memory and their minimum spec is a dual 1.25 with 2GB of RAM fitted. As speric said, video and audio also hugely benefit from as much available memory as possible. FCP uses memory to load clips for rendering. The more memory available the less paging to drive there is, making for increased performace. ProTools does the same.

If that's true, that just make me that much more unimpressed with this program.
