NEW YORK — One of the targets of the Oil-for-Food investigation, Alexander Yakovlev, on Monday pleaded guilty to conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering charges for taking bribes during his work at the United Nations.

Is he considered a diplomat? He worked for the UN. Funny he was even charged.

I don't know that he's "high up the ladder" enough or fat enough to suffice for those looking to offer up a sacrificial lamb, but sometime or another look for such an offering to be made.

Yakovlev was stripped of his diplomatic immunity earlier Monday by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan (search) and taken into custody by federal authorities.
I think he is being used as a scape-goat for something even bigger.

I love how Kurt Waldenheim was a UN Sec-General and disallowed from ever entering the USA because he was a Nazi.
