An explosion has rocked central New York during the evening rush hour, creating serious disruption.
The explosion occurred in Manhattan's east side at 43rd Street and Lexington Avenue, near Grand Central Station.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

It was from a transformer exploding, so far not terrorist related.

NYPD: Not Terror Related

OEM: Asbestos May Be In Debris...

1 Dead, 17 injured: Stay away from 41st-47th on the east side...

'Thousands will not be allowed into their apartments tonight -- blocks and blocks cordoned off, no one allowed in'...

WCBS: The crater is 50-100 feet in diameter, with two vehicles inside...

Remember the scene in "The Siege" when the bus backfires and people drop to the sidewalk? The pictures of this plume of steam are like that. It looks like smoke, fire and death. But so far, it really is just an electrical transformer that popped right next to a steam pipe. Plain old mechanical reality in a city. Pray for the dead and the injured.

Can any electrical engineers here explain how a transformer works and how it explodes?

Was free. Now it's gone. Never to be seen again.
Off to join its brother and sister apps that could not
keep up with the ever updating iOS. RIP Nesen Probe.

Come on people; I know they gots TV and the intarweb where you all live. Look at CCN, NYT, NY1, heck even the BBC, to see reports of the *steam pipe" explosion.

edited to add: This explains why the Bowling Green station in front of my building was closed when I left work tonight. Luckily, I take only the 4 5 in the morning and take the A C home at night.

I don't have tv or the intarweb. Just a direct connection to the 'NN.

Sad, isn't it?
