Which is worse?
A "fat bastard" who is not nominated for an Oscar this year or a "retarded idiot" who is nominated for the golden rasberry? [/cheap shot]

Hey CO, what's the opposite to "lesson"?
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

"Wrong side of the river Elbe" we know where that is. It's in the area around Hamburg and east, west, south and north of that. Could be Canada.

Well, when talking about the "original" Hamburg - the one where all the Krauts live - "wrong side of the river Elbe" usually refers to folks who live south of the river, which can be considered the "wrong" side for various reasons. Everyone who's been to/lived in HH will know ...

Oh boy, I'm so confused ...

Hey badidea I was looking at your photogalleries and saw you were in Paris pretty much at the exact same time as I was - may 31st 2004 - I stopped there for a few coffees and smokes on my way to Spain.

Your cover is blown you can stop following me now

... and for a second there I thought Señor Obvious was just being his usual prejudiced self when in fact he was being his usual ignorant, prejudiced self. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Btw, calling the Presnit a "retarded idiot" is not right! My parents taught me that it's not appropriate to pick on the handicapped!

Oh, I know, that's why I posted it in quotation marks (just like "fat bastard") to show how wrong those kind of threads are...(it is satire)!

Hey brain trust.....http://www.halifaxlive.com

If I had been speaking in the singular it would have been "Stupid Canadian" the noun I used was plural denoting a reference to more than one person: such as a group of people or an organization.

Do you take the ferry across the Elbe. (I nearly typed 'Mersey' there)

I used to live in HH many moons ago. Now I live in Canada. So, maybe there is a connection.

Yeah, I take the ferry every day which is especially nice on a sunny morning with the sun rising behind the large cargo cranes in the harbour!
The only connection to "Canada" () I know of, is a company in Montreal I used to work with!

Nice one. I used to live in Blankenese and drive past the ferry terminal several times a week. It always looked like a really nice way to travel.
Hamburg is a beautiful city, I enjoyed my stay there. The only thing that sucked royally was the weather. Grey, damp, cold winters and grey, damp, cold summers.

Statistically I am also a lot more German than I am American - yet I still love the word "Kraut".

Last time I checked there weren't any Bavarians in my house (maybe I should check the the basement and the closets again?). Not too sure about Schwaben though - word has it that they're sneaky bastards and kinda hard to find (as long as they're not talking, that is.)

Un wrsch e Engel un Sonnekalb, e Fremder is immer von auerhalb!
Der beste Mensch is e rjerni, wann er net aach von Frankfort is.

Was is des Ofebach for e Stadt!

Die Bockemer hawe weiter geblickt, die hawe mit uns zusammegerickt;
die Bernemer awer warn aach net dumm, die gawe sogar e Milljon dadrum!

E Mdche von hie, de en Fremde nimmt, de hat en for was Hhersch bestimmt;

Des Berjerrecht in den letzte Jahrn is freilich ebbes billiger warn;

So steuern merr frehlich uffs Tornerfest!

P.S. shouldn't "doppelt" in Hessisch be "dobbelt" as in "bbelwoi"?

While I would say "Ebblwoi" I would have said "doppelt" in this context as well. Don't ask me why. I think the lack of hard consonants is more typical for Saxony (my father was from Saxony and when he was spelling words with P he was always saying "mit haddem B" und we were laughing our butts off *) ).

Or the classic:

Was war das meistgesprochene Wort der Deutsch-Deutschen-Grenze?

Gnsefleisch.

"Genn' Se 'fleisch ma'n Gofferraum aufmach'n?"

(an acoustic joke loses when written down)

Ah, isn't that great? As Swabian and Hessian we detest each other, but if we can talk about Saxony we can drink wine together again!

I'm taking German in high school this year. We had to memorize poems for some regional German poetry contest (which I won, of course). So to insult all of you losers:

Du bist wie eine Blume
So hold und schn un rein
Ich schaue dich an und wehmut
Schleicht mir ins herz hinein.

Mir ist als ob ich die Hnde
Aufs haupt dir legen sollt
Betend, das Gott dich erhalte
So rein, und schn un hold.

Eat that, **** heads.
