How can I stop my roommates from stealing my music using the software OurTunes... yet still let them listen over iTunes Sharing?

1. restrict their access to only one playlist.

I still want them to be able to play it, just not copy it.

I don't see why its such a big deal? Is this some sort of moral principle thing? There are far worse things to do, its a closed network, not like the RIAAs gonna sue you. I'd share my music and save them from the trouble of ripping it from the iTunes stream.

OK... just a thought... you could try... asking them not to copy your music? I'm assuming they are decent people, correct?

Edit: there's no technical way to keep them from copying it -- if they can play it, they can record it. It's just like recording an FM radio broadcast.

Well, I just limited them to the last 15 songs I listened to ;-)

But software should be illegal.

I just don't want them to copy it because I worked hard to get that music and don't want them taking it.... No I didn't buy it all, but got it from a friend who does. Plus I wanna have the biggest music collection out of all of them!

The only reason I have sharing on is because my other roommate has a better stereo for parties.

You have always been allowed to share and copy music with friends, it just wasn't realized that it would one day be possible to share music with a few million "friends". However, there is nothing illegal about sharing and copying music between a handful of friends.

It's fascinating how the RIAA has got so many people scared into giving up their rights.

I'd still like to see proof of this. If it is true, they must have in mind an exact number you can share it will.

When you say share, do you mean burning or sending them the files.... not just hitting play on your iTunes when friends come over just for a listen.

yet that makes it right?

Isn't that why Apple quickly disabled the feature to share with other internet user soon after iTunes 4.0 release.... just for this reason?

The way I see it, you have limited options:

1. Don't share your music with them.

2. Deal with it

3. Share your music with them and tell them that you will report them to the RIAA if they try to "steal" your "stolen" music

I read this whole thread thinking the whole time you have a valid argument. Then, you tell the truth and I find that you are just very selfish and a hypocrite. Come on man. You act like it is your duty to stop them when you got your music the same way they are getting it from you.

Why the hell not? Ever heard of under construction?

I'm not gonna change a little link on MacNN when my site is down.

As a side note: I'm trying to learn PHP/MySQL and implementing it into this next version. Thanks for your understanding

Wiskedjak--

That's funny. I seem to recall 17 USC 501 and 106(1),(3) indicating that it was illegal to reproduce and distribute copyrighted sound recordings without permission. So I'm still a little curious as to what you've seen that would contradict that with regards to doing it within a circle of friends. Got a cite?

dude, are you ready for a fix or something? you're acting really weird.

Get over it. That music's not even yours. You worked hard to get that music? By ripping it from your friend?

There was an article posted here quite some time ago (I believe) supposedly by Ben Stein. Look that up and give it a read. It talks about attitudes like yours. And not in a good way.

It's fairly common here. I see at least 5 iTunes libraries sharing on my source list here.

Glad to see you bought all your music But I bought prob %70 of mine. Yes, I admit, %30 is all ripped from friends.

But I asked my friends and they gave me the CDs. My roommates don't ask. They just start sucking gigs after gigs. And they just turn my iTunes Sharing back on if it's off.

Just bothered me I guess. But I can see all of your guys points of view and i'm being a dick.

Well that's just silly. It's called a username and password. You can even have your screensaver password protect your mac automatically.

If they are sitting down at your computer and turning on sharing, you've got bigger problems then the music they are getting. They are also able to get anything else you have...

Password protect it and put your password on your name; ex:

"John's Music (pass: boobies)"

ourTunes will probably eventually allow you to use passwords, though; but this will work until then.

EDIT: just read the rest of the thread. Why the hell do you want to prevent them from downloading music that you don't legally own anyway? If you didn't buy the CDs, it's stealing all the same. If you're stealing, then share the wealth.

Well, I have a lot of rare stuff that I like to keep because it's "special" to me. For example: Bo Kaspers Orchestra. I got it on my vacation to Sweden. No they all have it

I guess you don't have any music like that or just don't understand. Why should I feel I have to give every album to them? Especially when it's close to me?

The point is, they can have the stuff I rip from my friends, I don't care. They normally don't like it anyway. It's the stuff that has meaning to me that bothers me, thus wanted to stop sharing it.

But you're fine with them streaming it? It's not like you're losing the file; they're just getting copies.

Just limit your shared playlist to your stolen files and sit there with your special ones.

Exactly what I did I forgot about the limiting to playlists feature. That's all I needed wanted to know in this thread.
