Well, who would have thunk it, a brand-spanking new version of Yahoo messenger that claims to have multi-platform webcam support (think the old had too, but it was rubbish), and is even built in cocoa.

What do people think? I'd use it, but I don't know anyone who uses Yahoo anymore.

Oooh, goes to look... the only thing i'd use it for is webcam support. I thought Yahoo for Mac was a lost cause, obviously not. Yahoo 3 took 3 years though - ironic.

Did anybody try the webcam support?
The UI looks nice, lightyears ahead of the last version (which I still use on occasion).

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

What advantage does this have over iChat?

It looks nice, but there don't seem to be any new features. As far as I can tell there is still no audio.

MU has a screenshot http://macupdate.com/screenshot.php?id=3845
Looks kinda like the bastard child of iChat and MSN Messenger.
I don't use Yahoo IM (aside from /very/ occasional use of the service with Adium) so I won't try it out. It has Growl support though, that's interesting.

Yeah it has Growl support. Beside the webcam stuff the yahoo avatars are displayed when used. I haven't seen any real customization options, on adium u can really personalize your contact list and stuff.

So when is AIM going to be updated? Or does AOL expect people who use AIM to just use iChat instead?

Yeah, that sounds interesting. I know some people on MSN Messenger. Is that the same as Windows Live MSN Messenger?
However, I know more people on Skype. Hopefully this means that AOL will kick the video support development for Skype into high gear. I'm not really that interested in text instant messaging. Voice is where it's at. Voice with video is (sometimes) even better.
P.S. AI is talking about VoIP to phone support for iChat, like Skype already has.

MSN, AIM, .Mac, Skype, ICQ, Yahoo, Google Chat...
This all sucks. It is really time for some governmental intervention that mandates interoperability, because clearly the industry itself is incapable.

I'm thinking/hoping that they are the same thing. If so, hopefully that will give me a way to use my webcam with MSN people without having to use Mercury or aMSN. I don't like Mercury and aMSN all that much.

There was a Skype Beta version up for a few hours today with video support, its a bit buggy, but the video works great between Mac / PC

I have been testing the Yahoo Beta also, and it seems to be hogging the CPU big time, anyone else have the same results while using video on Yahoo?

Yes it is. MSN Messenger is now Windows Live Messenger. Microsoft is rebranding their internet services under their new Windows Live brand. Windows Live is their response to Google.

It's video only for now, but the info window that launches the first time you use the app says that audio/voice will be in the next beta. Looks like they're really moving along with this. Good to finally see!

Well that's good. Now the next question is whether or not the Windows Live Messenger interoperability will include webcam support?

Its unlikely, if I remember rightly the MSN webcam functionality is provided by Logitech because of some rubbish promotion deal thing a few years ago.

If you want a standard, you have Jabber. There is open standards based video in Jabber too, offered by Tipic.com.
Problems:
1) It is windows only
2) Jabber nerd community hates them because their server is commercial and closed source and they don't get support whatever they try to achieve.
As usual, so called free software community without knowing what they do hurting open standards.

aMSN and mercury both support MSN webcaming, I see no reason why yahoo! couldn't.
