BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | NZ fishermen land colossal squid

It was dying, so that's probably why it was so close to the surface. Pretty amazing!

The fisherman were smart in trying to keep it in tact. They're donating it to a science museum for further study.

very cool. My boyfriend has been following a story about one scientist obsession in finding a giant squid or colossol squid, I suppose his dream has come true now he can do further research with a real one instead of hypothetical. Very cool find.

Not exactly the first caught:

The first specimen recovered intact, a 150kg (330lb) immature female, was caught on the surface in the Ross Sea near the Antarctic coast in April 2004.

My granfather was on a warship in WWII. He said he saw some really weird looking stuff float to the surface after some dept charges where blown. Somethings 1/2 as long as the ships.

Very cool. IIRC Colossals are bigger than Giants (Architeuthis), but not as potentially nasty. Quick wiki links to save time for everyone
Giant Squid
Colossal Squid
Proof to not trusy any wiki article too much: can't even spell Colossal (Collosal? Sheesh!)
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
