What application are you using?
What's your network setup?
Do you have port forwarding turned on, and for what ports?
Are you getting green faces (if using Azureus)?

1) what's your computer setup?
I'm on a g4 powermac and I get much faster times with lighter applications such as transmission as opposed to azureus.
2) If you're on a college campus, your download speeds are restricted. Especially if you donwload for an extended length of time... however... they probably aren't restricted to 1-2kb.

Are the ports forwarded to your Mac?

If there's one thing I despise on Mac it's dealing with this.

I use Azareus, and for no apparent reason it will show my NAT as being open or Firewalled (or even the yellow option), even though I don't change any settings. It's infuriating.

What range of ports are forwarding, and are they forwarding to your current IP address? You have to check your computer's IP often, because your network is likely DHCP, which means you'll change IPs under certain circumstances.

Is this on a residential line, and if so, who is your ISP (Comcast?) ?

If you're on someone else's network (e.g., hotel, university), chances are that they'll block it no matter what you do. The only way around that is a VPN -- securely tunnel to another networking that doesn't block.

So if you are on a network using DHCP (with comcast as your isp) how can you forward to an ip address if it keeps changing?

If your router will allow it, use DHCP with Manual Address to have your comp always grab the same address. If you do this, it's best if all comps on the network use Manual Addresses, though, as if you shut down your manually addressed computer (A), another computer using regular DHCP (B) can grab that same address, causing an error when computer A logs on to the network.

Comcast will close TCP/IP ports on you, so if you have Comcast, it's no good.

Let's not dump on Comcast to hastily. I have never had an issue downloading torrents with my Comcast service. Sounds like a port forwarding issue.

He never did answer what client he's using. I've had much better luck with Transmission than with Azureus.
