My 1.83 Ghz Core Duo seems to be doing okay on Einstein. Many of the top computers on Einstein are Macs. Not sure of the reason. I am there though.

I know the feeling. My homebrew overclocked Athlon 64x2 box does better than my G5 most of the time and I spent just a couple of hundred dollars on that thing. Sigh.

I am sitting right besides a built Quad(Q8200) core with a ATI 4830. I think I spent about $500 on it.

I'm in the process of recovering from memory problems. The system was crashing due to parity errors, until one of the DIMM's died. The machine was off line for several days.
It is amazing. The 8-core Mac Pro running 9 SETI tasks runs only slightly warmer than the PowerPC Quad G5 at idle with nap allowed.

Gee, no recent activity here. I hope somebody is home!

I just got a new iMac with Intel Core i7 CPUs and I was wondering what (if any) enhanced software I should be running for SETI@home crunching. Please advise and point to the downloads, if appropriate.

Thanks.

Jimm,

I just got a new iMac i5 and set it up with an enhanced installer from here: Multibeam and Astropulse Combined Packages

Intel Mac Unified Installer - Includes Setiathome and Astropulse optimized apps.

I installed Boinc and setup SETI@Home and then closed Boinc Manager. Then I ran the "Intel Mac Unified Installer" and wasn't sure what to select and figured the difference SSS3 for Xeon should work as Xeons are old now. Seams to work fine. i5 and i7 both have SSSE3 and SSE4.1, 4.2 so it should be OK. The only other option that made any sense would be Core2 and should run OK also as it uses SSSE3 also I found out after the fact.

After running the installer you need to reinstall Boinc to fix the permissions. Then you are set.

Good luck.

Eventually there will be a update once we get everything updated for the new version 7 of the SETI Multibeam app.

Packages have moved into the forums on my server.

Linux/Mac
Hmm, so when I run this installer it asks if I want to do optional installs, including:

OS X Core Duo
OS X Core 2 Duo
OS X Xeon Mac Pro Towers

I assume on my iMac Intel Core i7 I do not choose any of these, right?

Thanks again,

Jim

The Xeon option will work just fine on your new iMac.

Technically, if you do not select anything, nothing will be installed. I used the optional install options as that allowed you to choose which version to install.

Those options were chosen back when Alex Khan first started building the optimized clients and they were top of the line.
