Here is the problem. I am trying to import some new CD's into my Itunes on my iMac G5 2.0 Ghz. I load the CD and the drive makes the usual sounds it does when I insert a CD and before it appears on my Desktop. The difference now is that after making the "reading" sound for maybe 30 seconds, it just ejects the CD. This happens with several different CD's and even happened with the CD I last imported when I tried to see if it would read it again.

How do I diagnose what the problem might be? Any suggestions... am I just going to have to make a Genius Bar appointment and relinquish my iMac to the Apple Store for service. It is still under it's original warranty.

Thanks.. .I appreciate any help and suggestions.

It does sound like a bad drive. Are the CDs that you are trying to import standard audio CDs or are they the "DualDisc" DVD/CD hybrids that have started appearing? Slot-loading drives often have problems with those.

well one of the CD's I tested I imported not too long before (maybe like a day or two). So I know it's not the CD.

But what do you mean "just in case" in case what?

UPDATE:

Out of curiosity I put in a DVD, and the drive read it fine, and the DVD started to play in DVD Player.

Then I put in a CD I got in the mail 3 days ago has that has been played one time only on my CD player. Same thing as before, it attempts to read the CD, but then just ejects it.

How is it possible that the drive could read DVD's but not CD's at all.

Any more suggestions? Can your drive be busted on one way but not the other?
