It seems that apple is heading to this, but I thought I'd write it here for history.
Make .mac portable music/video storage, for example, give iphone/ipod touch users like 40-100 gigs for free (you can always purchase more)
this would allow either online streaming of all your music/movies, or at least some of it
Also allow users to directly put purchased songs on your .mac drive
Allow users to upload "other" music to .mac to be shared as well.
With the movie rentals that are bound to happen down the road, allow users to view those movies via .mac directly either by streaming, or by downloading.
It just seems .mac is wasted now, and that if it can tie in better with iphone/ipod, it would become much more desirable.
Any comments, or idea's?

Agreed. What does that have to do with $1b a year? They already make that in a quarter.

Apple made $19.315 billion last year, and profited $5.598 billion.

nevermind how much they would make. I think it is a good idea and something that would actually tempt me to buy .mac.
it would work well for gen one iPhone owners with limited storage. Then again without 3g you can't really stream anything so ability to download would be crucial.

Well, I meant +1 billion dollars, not 1 billion total.....
It would drive hardware sales, and .mac subscriptions through the roof.
What is confusing?

I think we're missing more than a point. We're missing a COMPELLING idea.

This is also how Apple could get sued for hosting illegal copyrighted works and lose their shirts.

With the idea of Apple maybe getting into the renting movie business.
My only suggestion to them would be the ability to stream things over their products, such as the iPhone or iPod touch. If either is in wifi range, have an application where you can download/stream a TV show/movie. Also add a monthly fee, compete with Blockbuster, and then people can watch anywhere they want. From AppleTV, there computer, to on the go.

Somehow or other, I think Steve Jobs already knows how to make billions each year.

Do they monitor what you currently put in the .mac web space that is available to the world? Why would this change if they suddenly gave you 40gb more space? As far as I can tell the suggestion in the first post is just to add a nice interface to access stuff you can already put there. (and therefore people would want to buy .mac services making apple a billion dollars and not conflicting with the other statement about giving an extra couple gigs of space 'for free'.)

I heard that they are going to completely slash their product line-up and raise the price of a Mac Pro to $1 billion, and hope they sell at least one of them.

While I admit the first post didn't quite make it clearly into my head, I thought the suggestion involved a music sharing feature where you could upload whatever song you want and everybody else could listen to it.

Careful, that kind of logic just may win over the OP.
