Hi,

I have been given 2 700mhz eMacs (one with 1GB RAM and the other 384MB RAM).

I'm going to let my 5yo have one to play on but am wondering what to do with the other one. I will be offering it to my son's school but if they don't want it what can I do with it? Seems a shame to throw it out as it is in good working order.

Does anyone have any ideas on what i could use the other machine for?

Many thanks,

Matthew

Install Leopard 10.5.8 (with a simple hack, or else at least 10.4.11) on the 1 GB one and use it as a surfing machine.

Hi Eug,

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't think 10.5 would install on this eMac - is it a very easy hack? I'll have to have a bit of a google.

Thanks again,

Matthew

The hack is called LeopardAssist.

LeopardAssist | Supported Systems

If it doesn't work, then you can try a Firewire target mode transfer/install of the OS from another machine, or else just run 10.4.11. I prefer 10.5.8 (and that's what I'm running on my G4 Cubes), partially because I prefer 10.5 over 10.4 in general, and partially because 10.5 supports Safari 5. If you disable Flash support with Click2Flash, then surfing is actually half decent on a machine of that speed.

Plus you can put in a larger HD and use it as a jukebox for your 5-year-old, put all the sesame street videos on it, the muppet christmas album, stuff to keep a 5-year-old busy and entertained.

I would go with Tiger which flies on a 350 GHz G3 with 1 GB RAM I have around here. Boot up time, particularly, is amazingly fast given how software loaded that old G3 is.

As for the lack of browser support, just use iCab.

700MHz model runs OS 9. You could use it to run Classic software.
