I happened to find a hot deal a little while back from www.1and1.com where they gave you 3 years of a premium package that normally cost $40/month for free. I don't even have a page built yet, I just registered for a domain name through them for $5/year and use it to host files and pictures when needed. I do have a friend who I refered to the same deal who has since built a very nice page and is actually hosting a movie file for "ill will press" and has had no complaints. They seem to be a very reputable company for what it's worth, and their interface is pretty nice... so I can't complain!

I'll second www.totalchoicehosting.com . They offer a great deal of services and are extremely reliable compared to other cheaper hosts that I've used also.

I use www.mydomain.com for all of my domain name registering needs and I have never had a problem with them and their service. $7.50 a year

Geocities is fast but upload is slow.

I use XCalibre here in the UK. I've got loads of domains & websites with them

They're not the cheapest, but I can call them up and get problems sorted out in minutes rather than waiting in an email support queue

I'd be keen to hear what other people in the UK are using and the support they get from it

as for PHPwebhosting, it really does depend on which server you got dumped on. some are faultless; others are a nightmare and go down more often than a $10 whore on a double shift.

We've used www.dreamhost.com for a couple years and have found them very reliable. They offer PHP and MySQL, an ecommerce system etc etc. No phone support; very good email support. Tons of storage and bandwidth. Also, they include QT streaming.

Gosh, to hijack a thread or start a duplicate one, how to not do wrong

I'm looking for a web host with the following requirements:

- unix SSH/telnet access, full shell, cron jobs
- PHP, Perl, mySQL
- Tomcat/JSP
- 5-6 TLDs, 30+ subdomains.
- FTP accts that can be restricted to TLD/subdomain
- email accts per TLD/subdomain
- majordomo would be a major plus (mailman does not have a full admin-by-email interface)

hostforweb has this (except majordomo), but their support is becoming increasingly bad (they blame cpanel and throw up their hands and/or try and claim the problem is on my side without investigating known cpanel bugs).

Totalchoice seems to not offer shell access anymore.
Dreamhost doesn't make any mention of Java support.

So anything out there that offers this?

DreamHost seems to be hit and miss. When I was looking for a new host a few months ago, I tried them out. Got 2 days of downtime as a welcome present. Safe to say I was out of there rather fast

I've used the free Spymac service, it's not too bad, I used to host through my cable connection and that worked well. When I switched to Verizon DSL they block port 80 and while it isn't too hard to work around it was a pain in the ass.

All seem like a sham to me, but it all depends on how reliable a host you require.
Talk to ANY reputable web developer, and I guarantee the names that will often come up:

i recently brought my business to WestHost I have been very happy with their service and the 20 gb transfer with 1.25 gb space for 16 dollars a month is a great deal in my opnion. i have had no downtime, and they have 24 hour tech support via phone. i dunno if the deal is over but they also offered 2 free years of domain and waived the set up fees. Great host, order at the beginning of the month as they charge you for a full month even if registered at end of the month.

They had a huge DoS attack right around that time. In my full year of using them, that was the only time I had extended downtime. I highly recommend them. Their support, price, communication, and features are all excellent.

Wow. You are getting ripped off. For $20 a month you can get 64GB of bandwidth and 2.5GB of storage at Dreamhost. Their support staff is also rock solid, and their control panel is amazing. They have a great spam filter, and a ton of features.

Okay, I was comparing plans today and need to figure out something about multiple domains. I was looking at surpasshosting.com's shared plans and it turns out if you get multiple domains in one account, only one is the "real" domain, and the rest use that URL-forwarding trick, so that if a browser is using a secondary domain, the URL displayed never changes as the user navigates the site. I hate that.

So I'm wondering: is this par for the course, or are there hosts that will let me do real multiple domains on a single account at comparable prices (i.e. <$20/mo.)? Do surpass's reseller accounts (using an admin tool called WHM) work the same way?

I'm also wondering why this thread isn't sticky..
