Since I only heard about Google+ actually being live (though still in beta) a few days ago, I am surprised people are starting to ask about invites already. I do not have any to offer at the moment.

Don't take this wrong, but I want to avoid the avalanche of chatter and "1+" type posts that usually accompany this sort of request, so I'm going to say right up front that if anyone goes past "please" "thank you", or "how does this work?" I am going to delete their posts. Multiple violations will get users infractions that will get them temporary bans pretty quickly.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I think it's important to have good crowd control in place, whether it becomes actually necessary or not.

I've heard that they have run out of invites anyway at this point.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

A few people sent me invites. If I have an extra one, can I simply forward it on to someone else? I'm not sure how the invitation process works and whether it asks for the recipient's name or not.

Several years ago, there were two torrent sites that were invite-based in order to join. I'm not going to directly name them, but one's name meant "similar to a demon" and the other's name was the English word for the sound a pig makes. People posted threads here looking for invitations to those sites.

Then, Google picked them up, and somehow those threads made it into the top 10 results for <site name> invite, and we got a ton of new users who joined solely for the purpose of asking for invitations to those sites. Do we want to risk the same happening with this?

I do not want riotous panic and pandemonium in this thread, nor to attract scores of "new members" who visit for long enough to get invited and never bother to return. The torrent issue was one that was at the top of my mind when I posted earlier, but there have been others. Attracting new members is great, but really only if they contribute.

So...

Keep it moving folks, no crowding!

If anyone has one going, please send one to me. It's my username here at gmail.com

Thanks.

Do I need to throw in "how does this work" to stay within the rules?

Does anyone think G+ (or anything else) can ever depose FaceBook? Is Facebook too big to be beaten right now? Is there anything on G+ that is that much better?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

It's open to any email, not just Gmail. If you have a Google account, they randomly open it up to any Google accounts to sign up as well, so keep an eye out at plus.google.com.

It's an interesting concept and goes about things in a much different way than Facebook. Right now it just needs more people actually on it to work well.

It is very close to Twitter in the way that you can use the Circles to control who shows up in your feed, just like Twitter lists do. Plus the aspect of Facebook where you can see everything on the screen, so to speak. I think it's gonna take off. It has almost 4 million users I think so far.

Just curious: do any of you guys have non-techie friends who are interested in Google+? I'm curious, because except for a small number of fellow geeks, none of my other friends are even aware of its existence.

It's not even out of beta yet - still invite only. Yet it already has an estimated user base of close to 10,000,000.

Oh, I know. I'm on it right now.

I'm just saying that it had better make inroads upon full release if it hopes to have legs. So far people outside of the tech community seem oblivious to it, despite it covering every tech site the past few weeks.

Been on it for the last 3 days and love it. A couple things I don't like which are minor. I love the photo management which is much better then facebook. I wrote up a facebook note reviewing it and here are a few pictures of the photo side of Google+

The one thing I'd like to see is a "follow everybody in this group" feature. I in a food group, but in order for the entire group to talk, everybody needs to follow everybody.

The photo management is awesome, but the quality seems worse than Facebook. All the pics I upload, either from phone or computer seem super compressed.

I think Google + could be a contender and not a pretender. Ha ha Zuckerberg...

I don't agree with Google that they see a place in the world for both Google + and FaceBook. They are both very much the same, I just like Google + much better.

Eventually 1 of these is going to win out. My money's on Google +. I don't know, it just is, don't ask why.

Parents, old people those resistant to change will stick with the book. Young, geeks and those that like change will go to google+
