then about 20 seconds later it connects automatically.
This has been happening a couple of times a day for quite some time.
Now I'm at the point where it is starting to be annoying.
Has anybody seen this type of behaviour before?

Stupid question: fresh batteries in the mouse?
You could also try deleting and recreating the Bluetooth pairing for the mouse in preferences to see if that has any affect.

I've also heard of wireless internet access messing up a bluetooth mouse or keyboard. You could try using an ethernet cable and see if your mouse still messes up.
Also, double check your batteries as ibook_steve suggested.

Batteries are good. That's the first thing I checked.
I've trashed the bluetooth preferences and re-paired the mouse.
Let's see how long it stays connected.
Thanks for the input all.

I bought a Magic Mouse (bluetooth) with my MacPro. and get some weird results. Sometimes it does not move across the screen as fast as expected. Other times the cursor seems to skip over 2 to 4 inches of screen, stopping over buttons or links. If not noticed, clicking gets unexpected results.
An Apple analyst took some information for the techs but nothing has been suggested. They did send another DVI connector but have not tried it.
Battery % seems to be a problem. Currently at 43% and seems OK. Not sure how the determine percentage.

DVI connector? Is that a typo? Not sure what video has to do with this.

Apple sent me a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adaptor to try and fix my issue in which the cursor on the Acer X223W monitors moved irregularly when the Magic Mouse was moved. It seemed to work OK when first booted but got worse soon after.
One monitor is now hooked up to the Dual interface and the other is hooked up to a single port mini DVI. Mouse tracking seems better - maybe due to OS updates. I had other problems when one of the monitors was hooked to the ATI Radeon HD 5770 DVI port but have not tested lately.

I'm sorry, but how does the connection to your monitor(s) have anything at all to do with mouse tracking? The closest I can come to an answer to that question is that the cursor is hardware controlled by the GPU. But that still doesn't explain how the connection to a monitor would have any affect at all.

My thoughts as well but Apple sent the card at no charge.
For a while, I connected one of the monitors thru the DVI port on the ATI Radeon HD 5770. That may have been when I was seeing problems including the monitor being unstable after it was woken up. Suspected the DVI circuit in the monitor but it has been fine when connected to the miniPort through an adapter. That leaves the DVI port on the video card. Will reconnect it and see what happens.

What kind of batteries? I found even fully charged NiMH rechargeable batteries would cause me more problems. I still get occasional problems with alkaline batteries, but the number of problems I get with alkaline is way less now than when I used NiMH batteries. Perhaps it's the slightly lower voltage of NiMH batteries that causes problems.

I used a set of alkaline until they ran out. Now using a set of Duracell Rechargeable (1.2 V) and aware of the possibility that low voltage may increase the problem. The Mouse Preference panel is showing 43% of Who Knows What and all seems well. Have a set of Apple batteries and would expect them to work just fine ;-}
