MacMail 'send's' to OutBox

I have a friend who has an iMac OS 10.8.x
recently when he hits the 'send' airplane, the mail gets placed in his 'Outbox'
how might this be fixed ? I do not use MacMail myself.
Ive looked over some Google'd answers and some suggesst a plist problem

If mail is stuck in the Outbox, you should check the Mail Activity Monitor to see if it provides any info. You should also check the outgoing mail server settings in Mail preferences.

Window menu -> Activity
Check there to see if any mail process is "stuck".
