A friend of mine tried to install panther on his 533 G4 yesterday with no success. In fact, starting from the cd took too long. After about 5 minutes we restarted the machine and booted in back into OS9. At that point the computer stopped recognizing ANY cd that we put in it. So, we put it to sleep. 5 minutes later it recognized a backup CDR that we put in it. So I tried the panther disc again, but that seemed to crap out the computer again. Unfortunately I left him with a busted cd drive and OS9 still on his machine... so does the Panther install disc not like this machine, or does he need a new cd drive?

Did you use your original Panther CD or a copy? Either way, it seems like his CD drive needs to be either replaced or the laser cleaned. That would require to take the drive apart though, if you're not sure how to do that and don't want to lose warranty (or piss of your friend even more ) then you better don't do it.

Actually, on my iBook, I thought I had a bad cd of Panther at first, because it took way too long for it to begin the installation, I thought. I decided to wait a really long time. Sure enough, it took well over 5 minutes for the installation process to begin, and it appeared there was absolutely NO activity for the time I waited. My suggestion, wait a really long time and don't restart your system.

Your post gave a clue as to why you developed problems. I installed panther in my tower and it took about 15 min all told with out a problem. I remember a warning message at the start "not to stop the install once it starts". If you shut down only 5 min into the install and then restarted panther had not had a chance to finish the process. This would account for all your problems. Wipe the hard drive and try it again this time go get a cup of coffee and let panther install all the way.

We did not even start the installation process. It was just starting from the cd when the cd drive spun down and nothing happened for about 10 minutes. I am thinking my friend needs a new cd drive because it will not recognize ANY cd we put in it.
