That's the Cell processor. It's designed specifically for grid computing. It's really, really nifty.

Cell, you mean? It's true that it is PowerPC based, but Apple hasn't announced any plans to actually use it. It would be nifty, though.

Get a Dell now, Apple's dying didn't you hear?

Anyway I am curious as to how this is going to coexist with IBM's PPC 9xx series of chips. They say this will scale all the way from cell phones to consoles to servers. Obviously the 970 right now is a server/work station class chip, so what direction is it going to head in to? Though this does have one wondering, is this going to signal a cozier relationship with Apple, IBM and Sony?

Imagine the advertising budget that's going to go into the PS3 possibly advertising Cell, think bigger than the P4, do you think Apple will pick up on that and for once not re-brand a processor? Or is Apple even willing to give up that much control?

Really cool news article on it, just came out today.

Talks a little more about the Cell processor. It's so scalable you can stick it in something like a Cell phone, but also scale it up for a full blown computer.

The nifty thing is that since each processor can work with one next to it, you could technically have a cell phone that's more powerful than most desktop computers.

I think it's really cool. The Mac mini is a perfect candidate for this.

I had read that this Cell processor could be a G 6 for Apple. That the G could be dropped and be C1 etc.
