'Half-Animal' Woman Is Discovered After Spending 19 Years Alone in Cambodian Jungle
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — A woman who disappeared in the jungles of northeastern Cambodia as a child has apparently been found after living in the wild for 19 years, police said Thursday.
The woman — believed to be Rochom P'ngieng, now 27 years old — cannot speak any intelligible language, so details of her saga have been difficult to confirm.
"She is like half-human and half-animal," said Mao San, police chief of Oyadao district in Rattanakiri province. "She's weird. She sleeps during the day and stays up at night."
The father of Rochom P'ngieng, a member of the Pnong ethnic minority, said he recognized his daughter by a scar on her back and her facial features, according to Mao San. The father is a village policeman named Sal Lou.
Rochom P'ngieng, then 8 years old, disappeared one day in 1988 when she was herding buffalo in a remote northeastern jungle area, said Chea Bunthoeun, a deputy provincial police chief.
I wonder if she'll ever be able to relearn the language and reintegrate.

Could she not speak at 8? I understand if you don't talk for a long time, you may forget how, but I can see someone talking to themself just to hear a voice.

What did her and the buffalo run off and get married?

What's weird, was that her dad was a policeman, and he let his daughter run around with buffalo at the age of 8. Strange.

Cambodia's 'Jungle Woman' sits and stares, yielding no secrets
But unable to speak any words the villagers can understand, the woman cannot solve any of the mystery that surrounds her disappearance for nearly two decades.
So far, Sal Lou's family says she mostly uses sign language to indicate her basic needs. She pats her stomach when she is hungry or needs to go the toilet and has taken a liking to the family's collection of karaoke videos.
"She just stared at that video without blinking. She liked it very much," her father said.

They brought food to the toilet, so she can do both at the same time.

Lack of clothing comes to mind. I suspect the press photo was taken later.

I heard this story on NPR, and they said that the parents and officials weren't even sure that this was their daughter.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

In every story that I've read, the parents and the brother said they recognized her as soon as they saw a particular scar that she got in her childhood. The brother remembered it especially because he caused it.

Considering the Alice case in the 1970s, the data on such cases would indicate that she is unlikely to be able to learn a language...

the part of the brain that processes language becomes impaired if it goes without stimuli for even a few years...
studies have been done on this several times over the past 100 years and they all show the same result.
the raw fear the child experienced was probably enough to cause damage on its own.
