Can you buy pretty much any major brand optical drive and expect it to work properly with OS 10.3 with minimal fuss? I'm looking at an NEC DVD+-RW and am wondering if it's compatable.

Hi!

You might want to take a look at xlr8yourmac's drive compatibility database:

Most optical drives are compatible nowadays, at least in terms of basic functionality. Some proprietary features may not work, but at the very least you'll be able to burn a disc at the rated speed.
