Following a hiatus from his own music career since 1999's 2001, Apple music executive Andre Young -- better known to the world as rapper, producer, radio host and entrepreneur Dr. Dre -- will release his new album, Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, as an exclusive to be streamed on Apple Music, and sold digitally on iTunes. Dre has also exclusively allowed the streaming of his first solo album, 1992's The Chronic, on Apple Music.

The news is perhaps unsurprising given Dre's role within Apple. As one of co-founders of Beats Music, he has been instrumental in helping Apple develop both its subscription music service and free radio roster. He hosts his own biweekly show on Beats 1 entitled "The Pharmacy" where he announced the new album. On this weekend's show, he also mentioned having abandoned work on a decade-long project that was to be an album, titled Detox, first mooted as being worked on in 2001 and, despite some singles being released from it, ultimately dropped by Dre and not being up to his standard.

The new album drew inspiration from, and serves as something of a complement to, a new biopic movie debuting on August 14 entitled Straight Outta Compton, which includes Dre as a participant. It's unclear if the movie will use the music from Dre's new album, but it focuses on the early days of NWA, a group Dre was involved with. The Comptonalbum features guest artists, including former NWA colleague Ice Cube, proteges Snoop Dogg and Eminem, Jill Scott, Kendrick Lamar, and Xzibit.

The album is now available for pre-order, and will sell for $14 on iTunes. Pricing for a physical CD of the record has not yet been revealed, but is expected to be comparable.

First of all, "Dr. Dre" isn't a doctor in any meaningful sense of the word. Second, what is admirable about him? Doesn't he have a past as a perpetrator of domestic violence and violence against women in general? Just google his name ...

Lots of people use the term Doctor without having a doctorate. That silly Time Lord, for example, or that soft drink ...
