Yikes is sort of right - I think I know what's going on. I was assuming that the stings I were parsing were ASCII, but I guess they aren't always. I've switched my NSString initialization calls from using NSASCIIStringEncoding to NSUnicodeStringEncoding, so hopefully that will fix that problem. There are several other things I still have to fix as well, such as the fact that Meteo is downloading files to /Library/Application Support/Meteo, and that requires Admin privledges (doh!).

I guess this gives me plenty to do before the next release.

dunno if thisis related to the unicode strings or not, but for Taipei, Taiwan, the Extended Forcast has weird entries such as "NEW! <br>" and "Personal Weather Stations". Curiously this didn't happen to all of the English-speaking countries I have on the list.

Oh btw thank you for the wonderful app - take a few days off will you? :-)

ack - it feels like the menu freeze bug of old is back - after not having one for a while, the new version hangs on loading and sometimes after a wake from sleep, or even after the computer just being on for a long time...

Well, I have a new beta of 1.2.6 - hopefully the development life will be shorter of this version, but I'm not going to jump the gun like it did with 1.2.5... sometimes we have to learn life lessons the hard way.

What's new?

- "Kill other Meteo" is now an option in the preferences
- Temperature data from wunderground will be mapped as so:
low 10's => 12
mid 10's => 15
upper 10's => 18
- Radio buttons for weather alerts are now check boxes
- Removed html garbage and ads that were showing up in extending forecast
- Added exception handlers to hopefully prevent MMS (missing menu symptom)
- If icons can't be downloaded to /Library/Application Support (requires admin privileges), they will be downloaded to ~/Library/Application Support instead

This seems to address the majority of bugs and complaints that I have been getting. One complaint that I have no idea what to do with is that in some docks, the temperature is really hard to read.

The big thing, hopefully, is that MMS is hopefully gone. If not....

Any way you could add the ability to run both dock icon and menubar in 1.2.6? Thanks

I'm sure once someone found Mail.app's dock icon text setting, it will be much more readable in the dock icon.

Ask and you shall recieve (it's hidden in the updating tab... I have no idea where to stick it otherwise).

Same 1.2.6 link as above,

Matt,

1.2.6 still hangs on loading for me. I deleted 1.2.5 before moving 1.2.6 to my apps folder. Restarting didn't help.

Joel, what cities where you using and what weather servers? I'm getting no problems here, but I guess the weather Gods shine more on Illinois (even if the NCAA does not)

Matt,

The only city I am using is Cincinnati. Unfortunately, I have no idea which servers are being used and can't check the preferences. I've never made any changes to them, so whatever the defaults are set at would be my guess.

Thanks,

Joel

Deleting the preferences and re-starting fixed the problem. 1.2.6 is working great now.

By the way, thanks for a terrific program. The new icons are great (thanks Adam) and the warnings should be very helpful.

Thanks!

Well I deleted prefs, and created new cities using Wunderground and I've had no problems at all since then.

One minor suggestion (for whenever you get around to it)

The "record" information's naming seems redundant. Currently there are:
Max Hi Normal
Max Hi Record
Min Lo Normal
Min Lo Record

It would be great if these items could be shortened to:

Normal Hi
Record Hi
Normal Lo
Record Lo

As ever, keep up the awesome work!

After playing around with text setting, I found that Apple is using Helvetica Bold at size 24. You can set the degree symbol to size 14 and baseless shift at 7pt.

Maybe you could add an option to enable subtle shadow underneath the text? Maybe it'll look better at small size?

BTW, thanks for adding an option for both dock and menubar! If you ever need a meteo ads for magazine, website, etc, I'd love to make some

I like the new icons, but ...

Today at 3:30 p.m. it changed to the moon setting. That seemed a little early to me.

Also, the icon indicated that it was cloudy all day here, when that clearly wasn't the case.

I'm using 1.2.6b, and Meteo was pulling info for Berkeley, CA only from wunderground.com.

The latter, I understand, was probably just wunderground mis-reporting. But the change to an evening icon in the middle of the afternoon seemed odd.

In general, it's a really nice app.

Hey, I had pretty similar results over here on the other side of the Bay at Stanford. The cloudy all day thing is definitely an issue with Wunderground (I set up Menlo Park on a couple different servers and the results are quite different), but the early Moon setting is a little disturbing!

I was using the 1.2.5 release quite normally until tonight when I see the icon in the menu bar but I can't pull the menu down. In the system console I see the message:

2003-03-19 21:08:52.923 Meteorologist[1398] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: Conversion to encoding 30 failed for string "

<IMG SRC=..."

I bet this is a parsing problem with weather.com again. I would switch to wunderground but its notion of current conditions seems wrong much of the time compared to weather.com

Anyway, I have to kill the app from a terminal window via its process id to continue. I will wipe my preferences file to see if that lets me continue.

You need to download the 1.2.6 beta posted above by Matt...it'll fix your "freeze" issue (hopefully)...

Matt:

When downloading icons for the first time after installing this version, is it possible to make a check box of which icon sets you want? For example, instead of automatically downloading both the dock and menu bar icon sets, the user can click just the "menu bar" ones if he knows he'll never use the dock ones to begin with. Does that make sense?

That sounds like 'feature bloat' to me. You only have to get the icons once, or when updates come.. I think it would just cause confusion.

I'm looking into cutting down graphic size by changing some .tiff to .png and merge some Dock Icon 128x128 icons with MenuBar 16x16 icons.

Matt, is this a good idea?

The result seem much smaller..

MoonPhase-15.tiff............92k

MoonPhase-15.png..........28k

--------------

Hazy.tiff (Dock Icon) + Hazy.tiff (MenuBar Icon).......112k

Hazy.icns (both merged in one)....................................32k

As long as NSImage likes .png files, I'm cool.

I've got a question... how am I suppose to deal with the massive amount of email I'm getting? I get 40-50 emails a day right now (not counting spam and list server stuff), and my poor modem is about to burst into flames. More importantly, I don't feel like I have any time to program, respond to emails, and do anything else... I think I need a secretary or something

Well, in my little spare time, here's my total list of what's new in 1.2.6 so far:

- "Kill other Meteo" is now an option in the preferences
- Temperature data from wunderground will be mapped as so:
low 10's => 12
mid 10's => 15
upper 10's => 18
- Changed naming of record and normal hi's and low's
- Closing Alerts window now stops music/beeping
- Added threading support (experimental)
Is anyone still having MMS? I still seem to get emails about it from users who are trying the beta, and I have no idea why....

I reported earlier about menu freeze and the console message like the following:

2003-03-22 12:41:47.923 Meteorologist[1565] *** NSTimer ignoring exception 'NSCharacterConversionException' (reason 'Conversion to encoding 30 failed for string "

<IMG SRC=..."') that raised during posting of timer with target 1cca120 and selector 'newDataTimerFired'

This initially happened with the 1.2.5 release and now happens with 1.2.6 beta.

It seems related to weather.com parsing problems. Once it happens, I have to force quit Meteo which is a pain.

Actually with the 1.2.6 version and electing to have both the menu bar and the dock enabled, I can quit the app from Meteo's quit menu.

Update: problem seems to be with trying to get data for Edinburgh UK. I have three locations: Philadelphia, Palo Alto CA and Edinburgh Scotland. Once the menu freeze happens, the weather display from the dock still works. Some weather items are missing however.

Further update: I just grabbed the the latest 1.2.6 beta and the problem with both parsing weather data and missing menu update is now (at least for the moment) gone. Hoping for the best.

Secretary sounds like a good idea! If I were you I would just send them directly to this thread, it would probably answer a lot of people's questions, you could have a pre-written email waiting to send out. Also, a note on the webpage might help.

As for me, I'm having the Menubar Freeze bug. It seems to only happen with weather.com, but unfortunately my Wunderground forecasts are wildly innacurate, and NWS doesn't have Canadian cities.

The last time it happened I got the following console message:

>>>
2003-03-22 12:35:05.492 Meteorologist[6552] *** NSTimer ignoring exception 'NSCharacterConversionException' (reason 'Conversion to encoding 30 failed for string "
<IMG SRC=..."') that raised during posting of timer with target 1ee100 and selector 'newDataTimerFired'
>>>

I killed it from the terminal, relaunched, and it's now stuck in the "Loading..." stage. The following message appeared in the console:

>>>
2003-03-22 16:23:44.220 Meteorologist[12255] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: Conversion to encoding 30 failed for string "

<IMG SRC=..."
>>>

My cities are Menlo Park, CA - La Jolla, CA - Edmonton, Canada - Vancouver, Canada

When it works it's fabulous, keep up all the hard work!

Ack!

I downloaded the most recent 1.2.6 beta and I get an unexpected quit every time I try to add or edit a city - I've even deleted my preferences, and while I get the set up window just fine, I can't add any cities...

Anybody else getting this?

I'm not sure if that started happening before or after I posted the last beta - I guess before. It was a problem with Interface Builder; grr...

Anyway, a new and improved (haha) beta is ready, which hopefully does interlacing better and has all the NWS icons properly mapped.

Is anyone still seeing the Loading issue with the latest betas?

Well either way [I just re-downloaded], it still crashes as soon as I try to add a city - I deleted my preferences as well as even deleting the local image files (as I thought maybe they'd have something to do with it) but no luck - can't add a city right now.

Okay, I posted a new version which might fix your problem cpac. I also think .Mac caches files kind of odd, so it is possible that the version you downloaded was older than I had uploaded (it's happened to me before!).

Anyway, here's my current problem (besides the Loading issue) that is holding back 1.2.6: Wunderground.com and NWS don't supply current weather icons. Weather.com does, but for NWS and Wunderground, I've been having to use the first forecast item, which a lot of people have been complaining about. Currently, I have no weather icon assigned for NWS and Wunderground, but that's not a very good option.

What to do...

Nevermind! I just replicated the crash - time to investigate.

w/r/t the crashing - thanks for checking into it...

w/r/t to current weather icons - is there a way to just have Meteo use the weather.com data even if it uses other servers for everything else?

Okay, I fixed it (I think). It's amazing how code will work for months and months, and then all of a sudden stop working.

Actually, cpac, what you could do is do a search on both NWS and Weather.com or Wunderground and Weather.com, and because Weather.com is the last server, all the weather info displayed (for the most part) will be from either NWS or Wunderground, and then because NWS and Wunderground aren't relaying the current weather image, Meteo will then look at the Weather.com image.

Hmmm...

New betas up.

Yep - no more crashes for me.

However, currently for Salt Lake City, Meteo's showing a snowflake in the menu bar, despite the fact that it is set up with wunderground, NWS, and weather.com. - Weather.com's Salt Lake City page is showing Mostly Cloudy as the current condition (which is accurate) but it seems that Meteo is still using the overnight forecast to fill in the current status icon...

Oh yeah, I reverted back to that because the lack of icon for the moment was making me mad I have no idea what I'm going to need to do about this. I'm afraid that I might have to parse the current conditions string to figure out what image would be appropriate *shudders*

Matt:

I think you have a winner on this last beta...not a problem at all on my end.

(I did have to delete all prefs though to get it working again)

Thanks.

Matt:

I am still getting alot of "?" using Weather.com...I think the problem is that anytime a weather condition of "Mostly Cloudy/Wind" or "Party Cloudy/Wind"...it can't relay the correct icon. The ONLY time I have an icon problem is with parsed information that has a "/Wind" or "/fill in the blank" in it.

Can you make it so that the icon chosen is by the first information parsed before the "/Wind" or whatever? For example:

"Mostly Cloudy/Wind" = Mostly Cloudy icon
"Partly Cloudy/Wind" = Partly Cloudy icon
"Snow/Wind" = Snow icon

Just a thought.

Thanks.

Matt:

I noticed today that Apple is starting to accept applications for the WWDC Design Award, are you still going to pursue that? I wish you the best of luck and truly don't think another "student" entry out there can match what you have put together here.

Go get-em...

Well, the problem is, weather.com gives me numbers for the weather icons, so I have no idea (at least my code doesn't) what those numbers really mean. 23, 24, and 25 are the only ones I still have mapped to "Unknown.tiff", as the pictures look like Wind pics. If you know what the forecast is for those (like Mostly Cloudy/Wind), then I can map them correctly. But my image code doesn't look at the forecast code right now, and I would like to keep it that way (abstraction is good ).

Maybe Adam can make icons for 23,24,25?

Okay, I've downloaded the latest beta, hopefully this will fix my menu freeze. I'm going to leave the Canadian cities off for now just in case they were the problem.

Am I the only one have funkiness with the length of extended forecast?

If I put 1 day, it shows 3. If I select 3 days, it shows 7. If I select 5 days it shows 10. Weird!

Thanks Matt for the continued hard work,
