I'm still using my trusty 3G with the 4.2.1 firmware. However, I find more and more apps won't get synced because they require newer version of the firmware. Shouldn't iTunes check if the newer version will run on my setup before offering me to upgrade?

Is there a way to revert to a previous version without reverting everything from a backup?

Thats a good point. It certainly should warn you. As in someone should have thought of this and programmed the feature in. I'm afraid I have had supported hardware for since the original iPhone came out so I don't know if anyone did program this feature. Maybe its another way to persuade people to upgrade.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

That doesn't make sense. If Apple were to do that, they'd lose one more way to encourage you to upgrade.
