Just recently my wired mighty mouse scroll button on my Intel iMac has started acting strange in that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Do I detect fom postings that this is a generic problem and nothing much can be done about it?

The scroll button gets dirty (from your fingers, dust in the air, etc.) and sometimes stops properly engaging so it's pretty much ignored by the mouse. When this happens with mine, I turn the mouse over on a mouse pad and run it up and down vigorously until the cursor starts responding in both directions again. Give that a try. I also occasionally wipe down the outside of the mouse with an alcohol swab (the kind the nurse uses before giving an injection) to clean it off, including the scroll button. This has apparently reduced the incidence of scroll button issues, but I haven't actually collected data to see if it really has helped or not. At least the mouse is cleaner as a whole.

I use a rubber (the kind you erase pencil with).

And curses.

I got so mad at this problem that I took the whole mouse apart and cleaned it out. I did the upside down and rub method for a while but that even stopped working. So, I took drastic measures and took it apart.

Thanks for all your replies. I cleaned it with some lens cleaning fluid and a cotton bud and it worked ok.

I use alcohol pads, and that seems to work well. It's an extremely common problem and I recommended this solution to many people.
