Hi, I am running connected to an external display. I want to turn off the laptop screen and just use the external, can I do this? Its a 12" 1Ghz PB by the way.

Yip, just boot up your PB with the screen lid closed, and your monitor on. I'm not a fan of leaving the lid closed though all the time(heat), so once OS X has booted up, you can flip the lid open again, and it'll still be off.

so I guess just the external mouse and keyboard can wake it up closed?

Yes. And you need to do the Bluetooth Firmware Update in order for Bluetooth devices to be able to wake up your PB from sleep.

But can you cold-boot an Al PB with the lid closed? I have a USB keyboard with a power key, but that only seems to work when the unit has first been put to sleep with the lid open. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Doesn't work with my 12 inch pb too.
It worked with the Pismo and the Ti500. But somewhere@LowEndMac I have found that the usb-power-on went out of the firmware with the Ti667.
