I think I would shoot myself if I was a parent now and had to put up with my kids watching crap like Spongebob. Maybe I'm terribly biased, but I think the stuff that we grew up with on TV was vastly superior to the stuff they're cranking out now...
What are some of your favorite and/or most memorable Sesame bits? There are so many that come to mind for me: all of the yip yip monster bits, the pinball counting thing, Super Grover, telephone rock, the Snuffy being missed by the adults drama, Grover as a waiter, Kermit the Frog and Sesame St. News, Cookie Monster eating everything, Ernie and his bathtub and rubbie duckie saga...
I never did watch the Electric Company, but my wife did. We bought some Electric Company DVDs so that I could experience them, they were pretty hip too...
What are some of your favorite bits, and why can't they make educational kids shows like they used to?

YouTube - Electric Company-the "lick-a-lolly" song
Although I disagree about kids TV today versus back then. My kids like Sesame Street whereas I loved it. Not because it was so much better, but because that was the only game in town. Most shows today aren't pure basic education because they're entertainment value is much higher. Kids today are better off with the variety they can have.
PS. Spongebob kicks ass!

What do kids have in the way of educational shows that are popular these days anyway?

Well, there's this show called Sesame Street. Perhaps you've heard of it. It's on every day.

Walk around dressed as any credited Sesame Street muppet and see how many kids think you're awesome. Again, it's not the only pre-school show in town anymore, so no show will ever be as popular with the ankle biters as the Street was in the 70s.

Sesame street is a lot different now. The last 20 minutes are all Elmo. It's still better than a lot of kids' TV, though. The stuff on PBS at least has some educational content behind it, and the stuff on Playhouse Disney had some meaningful content as well. Most of the kids shows our 4-year old watches on the TiVo come from these two stations.
I can't stand kids' shows that are basically half-hour long commercials. Of course, all the shows I used to watch as a kid, like GI Joe, Transformers, and Voltron, were half-hour long commercials, and I turned out OK. I guess knowing really was half the battle!
I think besson3c probably looks like Inspector Gadget.
(Sadly, I could not find a picture of Inspector Gadget playing a tuba.)

I was thinking about this the other day. The show I miss the most?
3-2-1 Contact.
Sadly, I haven't been able to find where it's out on DVD.
I think kids' TV went down the tubes (no pun intended) when it became a for-profit deal. From what I remember, when I was a kid in the early '80s, all of these shows were done through Public Broadcasting and were financed through donations.

I can't wait! I wonder if they'll get Morgan Freeman or Bill Cosby to cameo?

School House Rock and Bill Nye the Science Guy were big winners in my book.
My mom started filtering Sesame Street when she felt they were becoming too politically correct. Then again, we were barely allowed to watch any TV when I was growing up, so it wasn't like we suddenly started missing out...

It's been a really long time, so I don't remember exactly. Didn't one of the characters die from AIDS or something?

Not that I remember, but you're younger than me I think?
I think all of the PC stuff like Ernie and Bert separating and phasing out Oscar the Grouch came much later. That was quite idiotic. Who, precisely, was responsible for this? Christian Right? Networks? Some activist group?

Oh, I know, but I'm thinking particularly about educational programs - the kind of programs I would be happy for my kids to be watching as a parent.
