My entire library is made of apple lossless. Can iTunes convert on the fly, or do I need to make a playlist, convert the playlist to MP3, make another playlist with the MP3s, burn it, and delete the MP3s? (Can you guess which I'd prefer? )

Last I heard the answer is still "no". I think this could be automated somewhat (someone posted a 'lossless workflow' applescript, but it didn't work for me.

Does anyone have an answer to this? I am looking for the same thing to convert my AAC to mp3 on the fly, just make temp files so I can burn them to an mp3 CD for play in my car.

Yes, the answer is that you can't. I convert the songs I want to export to mp3, and then create an mp3 CD from those. Then I delete the mp3s from the iTune's library.
Apple in my opinion does not make it easy on purpose.
