I am trying to find the Quark Extension for Quark 4 that allows you to use othe image formats (jpeg). I can only use tif's at the moment, and it's quite annoying...

if you go to quark's website and navigate to the xtensions section you can search for stuff for older versions, including v4...give it a try and see if it comes up with what you are looking for:

Just out of curiosity, why are you using jpeg in a layout?

You may want to rethink that unless you know exactly what you are trying to do (I'm not trying to be a jerk, just trying to lend some help)

To be honest, when I was taught how to use Quark, JPEG's were just what we used. What do you think I should use? The only ones i can use now are EPS and TIF. I have Photoshop 5.0 and Illustrator 8.0.

i know these are all ancient, but its OS 9 G3 500mhz iMac Slot Loader, and it runs these programs awesome-ly ( i know its not a word) and I will never buy a PC EVER again!

You don't have to use a plugin to use jpegs in XPress 4.

Simply save the jpeg as an EPS that uses jpeg compression. It works and it's great. Presto!

it does work well, but the problem is that I take lots of digital photos in JPG (no other options) and i need them in quark. but i would still like to hear what others use in layouts.

If you're still using Quark 4.0.x, you want to update it to 4.11. I believe a JPEG import Xtension is included with one of those updates and a lot of other problems are fixed by those updates.

I had a similar setup to yours for a long while (Quark 4.x, PS 5.5, Illustrator 8.x). You could simply convert your JPEGs to TIF or Photoshop EPS. For a quick layout, placing JPEGs would be fine, but you don't want to use them for print production.

If you still can't find the JPEG XTension, send me a PM and I can e-mail it to you.

I was wrong in saying that i had 4.0. it is 4.1 and that's all it will tell me! I have only ever send EPS to print, but like I said before: i worked for a youth newspaper and it went to press every week : JPEG was all we used.

EPS is just a wrapper or a container if you will. It doesn't change anything, the file will still be JPEG as such and the sasme size as before. Just open the JPEG in Photoshop and save as EPS with JPEG compression. That is all.

Other than that you're gonna have to get that JPEG XTension. :/

You many want to upgrade to 4.1 at least...

I just say if you are working with tiffs and moving them to JPG, then you are downgrading the quality, but if you are using jpg to start with...

Sorry, I looked for a bit and couldn't find it.

As I mentioned before, the 4.11 updater includes the JPEG import Xtension and fixes important bugs. Have you downloaded and installed it?
